Scottish Jackie Brown, Flyweight Champ Who Shared Dressing Room with Muhammad Ali, Dies at 84

Edinburgh, Scotland (January 15th, 2020)– Scottish Jackie Brown, who won the vacant BBBofC British Flyweight championship in February 1962 by decisioning Brian Cartwright over 15 rounds at the Embassy Sportsdome in Birmingham, England, has died of dementia in his native Edinburgh, Scotland, at the age of 84. He was a British Commonwealth Gold Medalist as an amateur in 1958.



 

Fighting between 1958 and 1966, Brown compiled a professional record of 32-10-1 with 10 knockouts. Brown also won the vacant Commonwealth British Empire Flyweight title with a 15 rounds points decision over Orizo Obilazo, coming off the canvas in the second round to win at the National Sporting Club in Piccadilly in December 1962. Brown also held the BBB of C Scottish Area Bantamweight title, which he won with a 10 rounds decision over Tommy Burgoyne at the National Sporting Club in Piccadilly in February 1964. Brown retired after a second round stoppage loss to George Bowes in Newcastle in October 1966.



 

Brown once his dressing room with the late World Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali when he was on the Muhammad Ali versus Brian London undercard at London’s Earls Court in Kensington, England, in 1966, with Ali winning by knockout and retaining his world heavyweight title over London in the third round. Brown defeated Carl Taylor at bantamweight by eight round decision on the six bout Ali-London undercard.  It was Brown’s final win in his 43 bout professional career. He later worked as an engineer.
