Durango, Mexico (May 20, 2018)– Just because you’re a son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. does not mean an automatic gift decision will be yours. Fading Omar Chavez found out the hard way. Chavez, 36-5-1 with 24 knockouts, Culican, Mexico, lost a unanimous 10 round decision at the Fenadu Palenque in Durango in the main event on May 19, 2018, to Argentine veteran Jose Carlos ‘Puro’ Paz, 22-7-1 with 12 knockouts, Villa Maria, Corboba, Argentina.

Fighting at middleweight, Chavez fell two rounds short, getting significantly outworked by Paz by scores of 97-93, 97-94, and 97-94. This past February, Paz got knocked out in the third round by future world champion Jaime Munguia in Cancun, no disrespect in that loss. Paz did better in his second trip to Mexico.

Chavez lost a 10 round unanimous decision to 41-3 Roberto Garcia last August in Monterrey for the WBC Silver Middleweight title. Chavez lost 10 round decision to Jorge Paez Jr. twice, in 2011 and 2012, and lost a 10 round decision to Ramon Alvarez in 2014. Despite his best efforts and famous Chavez name and lineage, Omar’s abilities and offensive skills have fallen short at the championship level.
