Kermit Cintron vs. Antonio Margarito III Possibility is a Bye-Bye Cinderella Swan Song

Editorial By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Facebook contained a message recently, posted by former world welterweight champion Kermit Cintron, promoting the idea of his next-and likely final-fight against Antonio Margarito, also known as Antonio ‘Margarcheato’ in some boxing circles. Margarito, 41-8 with 37 knockouts, Tijuana, Mexico, will turn 40 years old on March 18, 2018. Kermit Cintron, 39-6-3 with 30 knockouts, Reading, Pennsylvania, has a draw, a knockout loss, and a No-Contest in his last three outings.

Margarito stopped Cintron in the fifth round of a 2005 WBO World Welterweight title bout, then knocked him out in the sixth round of a 2008 IBF World Welterweight title bout. Cintron, down three times in the fifth round and knocked out by Tyrone Brunson in 2017 after having Brunson down twice in the previous round and being unable to finish him, held the IBF World Welterweight title from 2006 to 2008.

None of that will help Cintron against a faded marquee name like Margarito, but Cintron has been fishing for a big name for his final bout for a while. Cintron wanted to fight Miguel Cotto, who fought Sadam Ali instead, lost and retired. Margarito has won his last three comeback bouts, with two 10 round decision wins and one stoppage win.

A decade after last fighting Margarito, Cintron wants one more crack at Margarito and he should get it. Margarito is not known for leaving outcomes to the scorecards. Margarito has a 75 percent knockout ratio, and Cintron is not known for having power like Margarito has. Still, Cintron is a fine technical fighter. His flaw has always been is the inability to follow the directions of his corner.

Cintron versus Margarito is, by Cintron’s own words, his final bout if it happens. There is nothing like one’s career going out with a bang. Margarito is the ‘Tornado of Tijuana’. In all likelihood, with no records to protect at this point in their careers, Cintron and Margarito will battle until somebody goes. Whoever wins, this reporter predicts if Cintron versus Margarito takes place later in 2018, only one participant will be left standing.
