Shango! Jamal James’ Body Shot Knockout of the Year of Diego Gabriel Chaves
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
The shot is often overlooked as a key offensive weapon in boxing and MMA. Consistent jab and hook body attacks, particularly in combination on the inside, can break an experienced fighter down fairly quickly against an underestimated opponent of significant power.
Welterweight Jamal ‘Shango’ James, 22-1 with 10 knockouts, Minneapolis, Minnesota, would seem an unlikely entrant in the realm of world-class welterweights. After winning his first 19 bouts, Jamal James lost a 10 rounder to Cuban Yordenis Ugas, then won a 10 round decision over Canadian Ionut Dan Don.
In the main event at Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster, California, on December 15, 2017, broadcast on Premier Boxing Champions on FS1, James faced world class Diego Gabriel ‘La Joya’ Chaves, whose record included a 12 round draw with Timothy Bradley. Chaves, 26-3 with 22 knockouts, Buenos Aires, Argentina, is clearly no successor to the late Carlos Monzon, but his only previous stoppage loss was in the 10th round of a WBA World Welterweight title bout against Keith Thurman.
