15-0 Terrel Williams Attempting Comeback, Must Overcome Prichard Colon Tragedy

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Los Angeles, CA (November 16th, 2017)– On Friday, November 17, 2017, in Flint, Michigan, 15-0 welterweight boxer Terrel Williams will return to the ring this weekend exactly 25 months after his bout with 16-0 Prichard Colon ended in near tragedy in Fairfax, Virginia, when Colon collapsed.

During their scheduled 10 round welterweight bout, Colon complained to Joseph Cooper about Williams’ rabbit punches, for which Williams incurred two points deductions. Colon, who repeatedly complained about the rabbit punches, went down twice in round nine, and was disqualified after his corner mistakenly took off his gloves one round early.Colon was helped to his dressing room by his mother Nieves, where he unfortunately vomited and collapsed. Prichard was rushed by ambulance to the hospital, where emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma relieved pressure on his skull. 25 months have passed, and Colon, now age 25, remains unaware and unresponsive. He is not on a ventilator, but breathing is all he can do on his own. Colon’s mother, Nieves, cares for him in the Winter Park, Florida, home where she and her ex-husband, Richard, raised him. Richard visits daily, walking his son in his wheelchair daily, and reading to him daily. Colon’s parents have filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50 million from the ringside doctor and the promoters connected with the October 17, 2015 Williams versus Colon bout in Fairfax, Virginia, which left Colon in a persistent vegetative state.

Williams, 15-0, 12 knockouts, Los Angeles, California, will face hot and cold Rosemberg ‘El Chacalin’ Gomez, of Managua, Nicaragua, 19-6-1 with 15 knockouts. Gomez was stopped in his last outing in December 2016 by former world welterweight champion Kermit Cintron. Gomez has a 73% knockout ratio, and a 95% knockout ratio in fights he wins. He also holds a 10 round decision win in a WBA regional title bout.

All that could spell big trouble for Williams, who has been over of the ring over two years, an indicator he still has not gotten over the Colon tragedy. Williams versus Gomez is scheduled for eight rounds. Gomez has gone eight or 10 rounds even times, while Williams has gone eight or 10 rounds only twice. Williams is predicted to win by an eight round unanimous decision. More importantly, Williams must put the Prichard Colon bout ghosts behind him and move forward with his career, or Colon will always haunt him in memory. Gerald McClellan, Magomed Abdusalamov and Prichard Colon are perhaps the three biggest living boxing tragedies still out there. There are others. Whether or not Williams can move past the Colon tragedy and resurrect his career remains a big question mark.
