CANELO ALVAREZ VS. GENNADY GOLOVKIN VENUE ANNOUNCED

By Ring TV

Los Angeles, CA (June 5th, 2017)– The superfight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin now has a site.

Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Monday that The RING middleweight championship bout — set for Sept. 16 — is headed to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The 160-pound summit meeting received attention from venues across the U.S., including Madison Square Garden in New York, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“Everybody wanted this fight,” said De La Hoya, who predicted Canelo will knock out GGG. “Everybody wants to go to Vegas, have a great time, it’s going to be a train wreck, let me tell you.

“I did receive a crazy amount of money, the offers were just amazing from Madison Square Garden. I was contemplating it. … Obviously my good friend Jerry Jones wanted this fight. I talked to my great friend Magic Johnson who wanted to stage the fight at Dodger Stadium.”

In the end, Canelo (49-1-1, 34 knockouts) and GGG (37-0, 33 KOs) will meet in the fight capital of the world, and their pockets will be thankful for the absence of state income tax in Nevada. After all, both fighters are set to earn career-high paydays.

De La Hoya said the decision came down to the entertainment factor Sin City brings, from pre- and post-fight parties, to the festive weigh-in and closed-circuit options.

The Hall of Famer said he plans to open 12 to 15 venues in Las Vegas where fans can watch the fight on closed-circuit totaling between 30,000 to 35,000 seats.

The bout marks Canelo’s third at the Las Vegas venue. In fact, the Mexican icon’s knockout of Amir Khan in May 2016 was the first boxing event at T-Mobile Arena, which holds seating for approximately 20,000 fans when configured for a fight.

GGG, despite being one of the biggest stars in boxing, will make his Vegas debut in the biggest fight of his career.
