Kovalev vs. Ward HBO Card Preview, Stevenson in Light Heavyweight Bermuda Triangle
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (June 6th, 2017)– Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward will rematch for the World Boxing Association Super, World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation World Light Heavyweight titles on June 17, 2017, at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, televised on USA HBO Pay-Per-View. Ward, 31-0, 15 knockouts, and Kovalev, 30-1-1 with 26 knockouts, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will fight to another close 12 round decision which could majority draw or go either way by or close decision. Ward down in the second round of their first encounter, won Kovalev’s belts by scores of 114-113, 114-113, and 114-113 on November 18, 2017, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
What is even more interesting here is Adonis Stevenson, the third fighter in this strange light heavyweight Bermuda Triangle, keeps hanging around beating second tier fighters while waiting for his big money opportunity against either the winner or the loser of Ward versus Kovalev II. Stevenson, 19-1 with 27 knockouts, Blainville, Quebec, Canada, retained his World Boxing Council World Light Heavyweight title this past weekend with a second round stoppage of Andrzej Fonfara, knocking Fonfara in the first, and needing considerably less time to end the affair then he did in his 12 rounds again Fonfara three years ago in the same ring at the Bell Centre in Montreal. 23-0 Columbian Eleider Alvarez won a majority 12 round decision over Jean Pascal to retain the WBC Silver Light Heavyweight title on the Stevenson card, and win the next shot at Stevenson’s title.
Stevenson, who will turn 40 years old on September 22, 2017, is too old for a fighter of Ward or Kovalev’s power and ability. Stevenson is hanging on for the big payday. Stevenson might be better off retiring after the Alvarez bout if he wins it, and he probably win. It is predicted Stevenson will fight Ward or Kovalev after Alvarez, with big money as part of the bout, sometime in 2018. With fighters like Joe Smith Jr. around, don’t bet on Stevenson taking any risky fights before the big kahuna. Money talks, and the well-promoted Stevenson remains well-protected within the 175 pound Bermuda Triangle.
