Mexico’s Robin Hood, Lightweight Robinson Castellanos, Upsets Yuriorkis Gamboa
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (May 6th, 2017)– Unheralded Robinson ‘Robin Hood’ Castellanos dropped the heavily favored Yuriorkis Gamboa in rounds three and four, winning by referee’s technical decision after seven rounds after Gamboa gave up on his stool. The ex-Olympian Cuban defector, signed with Golden Boy, decisioned Rene Alvarado over ten rounds in March 2017 after 15 months inactivity. Castellanos, 24-12 with 14 knockouts, Celaya, Mexico, who lost to Alvarado by stoppage in 2014, has now won 15 of his last 17 bouts. Castellanos used slight height and a three inch reach advantage to perfection, landing right crosses and right hands which left Gamboa dizzy and on unsteady legs. Gamboa, 27-2 with 16 knockouts, Miami, Florida, was behind on the cards, landed some headshots, but nothing with power enough to do damage.
Result: Robinson Castellanos RTD 7 Yuriorkis Gamboa, Lightweights (3:00)
Sitting on his stool Gamboa told referee Russell Mora “Ya no” meaning no more-bout ends.
