Las Vegas, NV (May 6, 2017) –  the most anticipated fight of the year since it was announced, became the disappointment of the year. Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez improves his record to 49-1-1, 34 KOs after a dominating performance over the disappointing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (50-3-1, 32 KOs) in front of the sold out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which was aired Live on HBO PPV. The fight went through all twelve rounds that went in favor of Canelo. All three judges scored the bout with ease 120-108.

When the fight was announced early this year, fans believed this fight would be an all out war. Something every boxing fan, fighters, media members, promoters, and trainers expect from two Mexican fighters. Fights like: Morales vs Barrera, Marquez vs Vasquez, just to name a couple. Tickets sold out, rooms in almost every casino on the Las Vegas Strip were sold out. Boxing fans showed up in caravans to witness a war and history. The arena was very loud as the fights made their way to the ring, fans cheered on their favorite fighter. Those cheers began to switched to boos and disappointments.

The fight began with a test session, with both fighters throwing single shots. Canelo quickly became the aggressor after the first round, using his jab very precise. Chavez looked a bit stiff by not letting his hands go. As the fight progressed into the mid-rounds, Chavez did not loosen up. Chavez was taking a punishment from Canelo. Chavez was basically a punching bag. He had no head movement, no body movement and kept leading in with his head. Canelo, however, took advantage of the poor quality from Chavez, and used his skilled combinations beat up Chavez all night long. Canelo snapped Chavez head back with a well connected straight right down the middle in the eighth round. Alvarez would not even sit on his stool during the break. Going into the late rounds the crowd began to turn on Chavez Jr and they did it in discussed of what they were witnessing. Finally, the fight came to an end after twelve rounds of boxing. The fight was shutout in favor of Canelo Alvarez. All three judges scored the bout 120-109.

“Tonight I showed I could move, I could box, I showed as a fighter I can do all things,” said Canelo. “I thought I was going to showcase myself as a fighter that could throw punches, but he just wouldn’t do it. Ive shown I can do lots of things in the ring, anything a fighter brings—I’ve shown I can showcase myself. I wanted to try something new, I never sit down in sparring and I didn’t want to sit here. GGG—you are next my friend. The fight is done. I’ve never feared anyone, since I was 16 fighting as a professional. When I was born, fear was gone. I never got my share of fear. I’m very happy, and the rivalry is going to show my skills even more. I’ve had difficult fights, and that will no doubt be a tough fight. But, I always say, Canelo Alvarez is the best because I fight the best.”

Canelo beat me, he beat me at the distance. He is a very active fighter—he’s very good and he beat me,” said Chavez, Jr. “I wanted to box but he went to the ropes and I just needed to throw more punches. I would’ve attacked more I would’ve been countered by his punches. Nacho told me to do that but the strategy didn’t work. The speed and the distance was the key. I didn’t feel that much power because I felt dwindled, I couldn’t throw as many punches as I wanted. My father kept telling me to throw more punches from the ringside.”

After the fight, a huge announcement was made. The fight everyone was waiting for is officially going to happen. Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have come to agreements and their highly anticipated fight will take place this September 16th, 2017. Further details on the fight are to be determine. Oscar did say within minutes after the announcement, he began to get calls from all across the globe, offering to host the mega-fight.

“Triple-G, you are next my friend,” Alvarez said. “The fight is done. I’ve never feared anyone since I was 16, fighting as a professional. When I was born, fear was gone.”

GGG also had a few words about the fight, after he was announced to come to the center of the ring, and made an exciting ring walk.

“I feel very excited, right now is a different story. In September, it will be a different style—a big drama show. I’m ready. Tonight, first congrats to Canelo and his team. Right now, I think everyone is excited for September. Canelo looked very good tonight, and 100 percent he is the biggest challenge of my career. Good luck to Canelo in September.”

David Lemieux vs Marco Reyes

The co-main event of the night featured former Middleweight champion David Lemieux (38-3, 34 KOs) vs Mexican fighter Marco Reyes (35-5, 26 KOs). The fight happened at a 163lbs catchweight. The fight went the ten rounds and Lemieux pulled the victory via unanimous decision.

David Lemieux was just in a fight less than two months ago when he went head-to-head with Curtis Stevens and knocked Stevens out in the second round. That fight was not enough action for Lemieux and took a fight with Marco Reyes to stack up the card. Reyes is a super middleweight fighter who’s been in the ring with Chavez Jr.

David Lemieux moved quick into action and began loading off on Reyes with vicious combinations. Reyes did look a bit nervous and had a hard time slowing Lemieux down. Reyes face showed signs of how much of a beating he was taking from Lemieux, having multiple cuts and swells around the eyes. Although the punishment was bad, in the late rounds Marco began to fight back. Marco worked the body and countered nice to the head pushing Lemieux back. David did not hold back and connected Reyes with a powerful left hook and Marco dropped his mouth piece. Marco repeated the intention of spitting the mouth piece to by some time. Finally the fight came to an end and the fighters met in the center of the ring, and paid respect to each other with a hug and a few exchanged words.

“He is a solid fighter,” said Lemieux. “I give him the respect, he went the full 10 rounds. I could have done better but I hurt my hand after round two.”

“We obviously came with the best we had, said Reyes. “In the last rounds, my objective was to throw as many shots as I could because I knew when I lost that point I was going to have to knock him out to win. He’s a great fighter and there’s a reason why he’s the third ranked in the world. We’re satisfied with the fight and the performance, and we did our best.”

 Lucas Matthysse vs Emmanuel Taylor

After over a year of being absent from the ring, Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35 KOs) returns against Emmanuel Taylor (20-5, 14 KOs) in a Welterweight battle which came out in favor of Matthysse.

Lucas Matthysse looked impressive with Joel Diaz in his corner. Emmanuel Taylor came into the ring showing confidence, but it was not enough for the hard-hitting Matthysse. Lucas’ punches were on point throughout the fight. After getting cut in the 3rd round by a head butt, Lucas fired a nice straight right down the middle, sending Taylor to the canvas. After the knockdown, things got worse for Taylor. Matthysse kept landing everything he threw. In the fifth round, Lucas lands a furry of punches and knocks Taylor down for the second time. Once the referee finished his standing eight count, the referee  calls the fight and Matthysse was awarded a TKO victory.

After the fight, Matthysse expressed a few word about his victory over Taylor.

“This victory motivates me, this is exactly what I needed to come back where I left off,” said Matthysse. “I felt great inside the ring and I felt like I dominated the fight at the pace I wanted. I feel great and I’m ready for what’s next.”

Emanuel Taylor was not happy with stoppage, and felt it was called too early. Even though the punishment he was taking was real.

“My plan going in was to win,” said Taylor. “My opponent was a tough guy, but I don’t know why the ref stopped the fight. I could’ve kept going more rounds. After this, it’s back to training hard with my team.”

Joseph Diaz Jr vs Manuel Avila

In the first televised match-up of the Canelo vs Chavez Jr event, Joseph Diaz squared off against Manuel Avila in a battle of California of undefeated fighters, which ended in favor of the Southern California fighter Joseph Diaz via unanimous decision .

The fight started off slow where both fighters testing each other. Avila was the defensive fighter fighting off the back heel. Diaz kept the pressure all night, connecting the right hand and great jabs. Avila seemed out of it and could not find his rhythm. Jospeh did well figuring him out, but could not finish his opponent. After 10 rounds, the fight went to the scorecards and Jospeh Diaz was awarded the fight and improved

“My plan going in was to feel him out and be smart,” said Diaz, Jr. “Once I had him figured him out, I knew I could keep digging at him with my jab and do work. In the last few rounds, I kept throwing body shots to hurt him which worked. Next up, I’m looking for a world title shot.”

“My timing wasn’t there; I felt like this was a learning experience,” said Avila. “I need to learn how to pick up the pace in between rounds. Our styles were off and I felt like it could have been a better fight.”
