In 2008 Saul Canelo Álvarez signed a four year contract with All Star Boxing Promotions but in 2011 Canelo signed another contract with Golden Boy Promotions. The President of All Star Boxing, Felix Zabala, took Golden Boy to court saying that they stole Canelo while still under contract. Canelo lost the case and now owes Zabala 8.5 million dollars but an appeal has been filed against the ruling. Here’s what Zabala had to say about the ruling:
“We won this case in court and a jury ruled that ‘Canelo’ must pay us $ 8.5 million for breaking a promotional representation contract we signed in 2008,” Zabala told ESPN Deportes.
“We don’t want to talk about a case that was already tried. The court gave us the verdict and established the amount that was considered fair to compensate us. Now all we are looking for is for Canelo to pay. They have just filed the appeal, although for the legal process to continue they need to file the $8.5 million with court. If they do not, we have the right to requisition any income or economic remuneration that Canelo has in the United States.”
“Any money that he receives in the US, the first $8.5 million will have to come to us – in the event that he doesn’t deposit the funds required by the court.”

Shawn Porter beat Andre Berto on Saturday night by TKO in the ninth round of the fight. Before the stoppage from the referee, Berto had been knocked down twice in the fight, once in the second round and then again in the ninth round which eventually led to the stoppage. Berto did not complain about the stoppage. Porter is now the mandatory for the WBC champion who happens to be Keith Thurman. This would mean Porter would get a rematch with Thurman after a close fight the first time around. Who do you think would win the rematch?
Jermell Charlo retained his WBC Super Welterweight Title by knocking out Charles Hatley in the 6th round of their fight on Saturday night. Charlo improved his undefeated record to 29 wins and now 14 knockouts. Even though Charlo won his fight flawlessly on Saturday there are plenty of fighters at 154 lbs that will give him a challenge like Demetrius Andrade, Jarrett Hurd, and Erislandy Lara. Who do you want to see Charlo fight next?
This Saturday Top Rank had a pay-per-view event which was stacked with up and coming stars whose names include Gilberto Ramirez, Oscar Valdez, Jessie Magdaleno, and Shakur Stevenson. In the main event Ramirez put on a dominant performance against Max Bursak. All three judges scored the fight 120-106 all in favor of Ramirez. After the fight Ramirez called out the middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Ramirez might be waiting a while if Golovkin finally gets his fight with Canelo in September.
In the undercard Oscar Valdez also put on a dominant performance against Miguel Marriaga. In the tenth round Marriaga was knocked down but Valdez was not able to finish him. Valdez won the fight by unanimous decision. Valdez is currently the WBO Featherweight Champion but he shouldn’t have trouble finding a challenging opponent. At 126 lbs Valdez could possibly face Carl Frampton, Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares, and Gary Russell Jr.
Also on the undercard was Jessie Magdaleno who successfully defended his WBO Title at 122 lbs against Adeilson Dos Santos. And Last but not least Shakur Stevenson, Olympic Silver Medalist, made his professional debut against Edgar Brito. Stevenson is currently at 126 lbs which is the same division as Valdez. It may be a couple of years until Stevenson gets a shot at a title but in due time he will have tough competition to face.

Billy Joe Saunders was set to fight against middleweight king Gennady Golovkin some time during the summer but the fight never materialized. Now Saunders has moved on to his next fight will most likely take place on July 8, 2017 against a fighter named Avtandil Khurtsidze (33-2-2, 22 KOs).
“He’s a good banger the guy. You can see by his record how many knockouts he’s got. At least now the British fans know who he is and he’s qualified now for Billy Joe Saunders,” Warren told IFL TV.
“This fight [with Langford] was all part of the deal, with Lou DiBella’s office. We worked very hard to enable Bill to get the shot against Golovkin, including [working] with Golovkin’s people. And that meant putting on the interim-title, giving this guy [Khurtsidze] step-aside money, and that’s what we did. And now Bill has to fight him and that’s where we are.”
“We want to go, as you heard, on the 8th of July. That’s the date we’re looking at… in London. Bill will fight on the 8th of July in London, Copper Box.”

[Canelo / Chavez Jr: A Fighting Tradition]
Saúl Canelo Álvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr are set to fight in Vegas on May 6th which is less than 2 weeks away. For a big fight like this HBO will usually produce one of their “24/7” mini documentaries but not this time. This might come as a disappointment to many but HBO did not leave the fans empty handed. Instead of an episode of “24/7” HBO has decided to make a mini-documentary style of show called “Canelo / Chavez Jr: A Fighting Tradition”. This show highlights the importance of boxing in Mexican heritage and how it has lead to the super fight between Chavez Jr and Canelo. The episode is definitely worth watching and can be found on the HBO Boxing Youtube Page. Or you can click the link here.

Tyson Fury hasn’t been in the ring since fighting and defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. Since then Fury has gone through some battles with his health and drug abuse. Now Fury looks like he’s getting back on track and maybe even back into the ring. Fury announced that he will be returning to the ring on July 8th on the same card as Billy Joe Saunders.
“Gypsy King reporting into the World. I can confirm that I will be accompanying the one and only Billy Joe Saunders when he fights ‘Danny De Vito’,” Fury said in an Instagram post.
“I’m coming back. Going over to Marbella [to train]. We are going to Marbella and I’m coming back to take on all bums. Bum of the month campaign, what you say Frank? So many bums out there that need cleaning up and wiping out.”
Do you think Fury has what it takes to make it back to the top of the food chain? Or will he be eaten whole by the monsters at heavyweight.
This Weekend:
The biggest heavyweight boxing bout in recent memory will take place on Saturday April 29, 2017 with former world champion, Wladimir Kltschko facing UK’s Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium, London for the IBF heavyweight world title on PPV.
