Stinker at Santander Arena: Grayton Head Butts Cintron to Five Round Majority Draw

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent- Ringside

Reading PA (March 18th, 2017)– In a welterweight undercard preliminary to the main event scheduled 10 round stinker at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening, March 17, 2017, David Grayton low blowed Kermit Cintron twice, dropped him with a right hand in round 5, and kept leaning with his head until a head butt late in round 5 caused Cintron’s right eye to close and then blink, prompting the ringside doctor to stop the contest.

Cintron was ahead on one card, and drew the other two scorecards, causing a bizarre five round technical majority draw.  Referee Gary Rosato could have and should have deducted a point from Grayton for the two fouls in round 5, which would have given Cintron all three of the scorecards outright. Real Combat Media scored the bout 47-47 a draw.

Cintron had a bad cut under his left eyebrow, and Grayton appeared to be leaning with his lean towards worsening the cut, complicated by numerous clinches which referee Rosato had to break up.  Grayton, 15-1-1 with 11 knockouts, Washington, D.C., and former IBF World Welterweight champion Cintron, 39-5-3 with 30 knockouts, Reading, Pennsylvania, probably will not fight each other again. Grayton, muscular and bearded, was well-prepared. Cintron fought cleanly. Grayton’s flash knockdown of Cintron along the ropes but legitimate. Kermit was not hurt, but an overenthusiastic Grayton, perhaps sensing the opportunity for the kill, hoped Cintron was hurt. While the bout ending head butt was ruled accidental, it appeared intentional from a neutral viewpoint, just that Grayton seemingly wound up butting on the wrong side when he came charging in with his head in the final clash.

Result: Kermit Cintron Technical Majority Draw 5 David Grayton (2:53)
