CARL FRAMPTON VS. LEO SANTA CRUZ II OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN & PREVIEW

By: Victor O. Garcia RCM Head Video Boxing Reporter

Las Vegas, NV (January 28, 2017) —A fight every fan was wishing for after the first meeting back in July 2016, WBA Featherweight World Champion Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs) will defend his title against for WBA Featherweight World Champion Leo “El Teremoto” Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs) in a highly anticipated rematch from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday night,  live on Showtime.

In their first meeting, Santa Cruz put his “0” and his WBA title on the line and was defeated in front of a full house at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Irishman Carl Frampton took the majority decision in the bout, which was a top 3 candidate for “Fight of the Year”. Santa Cruz and his team believe they can win in the rematch even though Frampton is the favorite to come out with the victory once again.

“It was hard to train, concentrate, I still went to the gym…but I didn’t train as hard as I did for other fights cause my dad wasn’t there. He was going through Chemo, he was going through radiation…I told my dad if he didn’t want me to that I wouldn’t fight… but my dad said no I want you to fight.” Said Santa Cruz while preparing for his upcoming fight.

Santa Cruz’s father and trainer was diagnosed with cancer early 2016 and had an affect to Leo’s preparation for his title defense.

Before Carl steps into the ring, he was asked what should the fans expect differently from the first fight and he said,

“I’m expecting to win, I believe that Leo was easily my toughest opponent to date, not being disrespectful to Leo, I’m going to win this fight easier than the first fight.”

In the first match-up, Carl Frampton was supported with a huge fan base at the Barclay Center. Large packs of Irishmen filled the arena and chanted for their national hero. Now that the rematch is in Vegas, the fans have followed their hero once again and have filled the strip here in Vegas to once again back up their countryman along with the thousands of Mexican fans that together will come together in what could be another great match up for the fans.

Co-main event: Garcia vs Zlaticianin

The co-main event can be a main event of its own. Undefeated and the WBC lightweight World Champion Dejan Zlaticianin (22-0, 15 KOs) will have his first title defense against former two-time world champion Mikey Garcia (35-0, 29 KOs).

Zlaticianin is the first work champion from Montenegro. He won the vacant WBC lightweight title last summer when he defeated Franklin Mamani via TKO. His first title defense is against a well known champion who comes from a boxing family. Mikey Garcia came back to the scene last summer after promotional legal issues with Top Rank that kept him away from the ring for two years. His welcome back fight was on the undercard of the first Frampton vs Santa Cruz back in New York when he defeated Dominican fighter Elio Rojas via TKO. Garcia made a statement by challenging the world champion and is ready to remind everyone why he has been considered one of the best of this era. The co-main event will be a great way to fire things up for the main event. Two world titles bouts in one night is a great way to kick off the 2017 boxing year.
