Last week Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s trainer Arnulfo Obando died after suffering a stroke days before. Obando had went under surgery after his stroke and days after he was declared brain dead. Chocolatito is now back in the gym despite going through something that many would consider traumatizing. With the absence of Obando, that leaves the position of Chocolatito’s trainer to be filled, and filled it was. Luis Gonzalez (Chocolatito’s dad) is now Chocolatito’s trainer.
“I felt good because we started our plan of work plan,” said Gonzalez. “The official trainer will be Luis Gonzalez, my dad, and Wilmer, who will be in my corner as well. The others [in the corner] will be trainers, I imagine, from Teiken. We have to see what will happen and the plan that comes together in 2017.”
Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward will be facing off in the ring on November 18, 2016 at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It looks like there is a rematch clause in the contract in favor of Kovalev. In an interview with Boxingscene.com, Kathy Duva (Kovalev’s Promoter) almost guaranteed there would be a rematch if Kovalev loses. “If Sergey were to lose you’d absolutely see a rematch,” Duva added. “If Sergey wins it’s not quite as certain.”
Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Álvarez last week and became the first UFC fighter to be champion in two weight division at the same time. After McGregor’s win on Saturday night many fans were calling him the Floyd Mayweather" class="aalmanual" target="_blank" href="https://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/player/Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.?utm_source=Shareasale&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_term=kw--Floyd_Mayweather_Memorabilia|cpn--no_coupon|offer--no_offer&utm_content=L--Boxing|t--all_boxing|p--Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.|pc--Collectibles_and_Memorabilia|ag--NoGender&utm_campaign=dest--www_sportsmemorabilia_com|creatv--Text_Link|date--9142015|geo--NoGeo&SSAID=720398&sscid=41k3_3sw5v">Floyd Mayweather of MMA. Mayweather did not take lightly to this and went off on McGregor. “I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated. I didn’t know Conor McGregor had a reign in MMA for 20 years and had world titles in five different weight classes. That’s something I had done. So I guess you guys are telling me something new, I mean if you’re saying he’s the Floyd Mayweather" class="aalmanual" target="_blank" href="https://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/player/Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.?utm_source=Shareasale&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_term=kw--Floyd_Mayweather_Memorabilia|cpn--no_coupon|offer--no_offer&utm_content=L--Boxing|t--all_boxing|p--Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.|pc--Collectibles_and_Memorabilia|ag--NoGender&utm_campaign=dest--www_sportsmemorabilia_com|creatv--Text_Link|date--9142015|geo--NoGeo&SSAID=720398&sscid=41k3_3sw5v">Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out. Have you ever made $300 million in one night? Have you ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night?,” Mayweather told TMZ Sports.
“So as far as you wanna say he’s the Floyd Mayweather" class="aalmanual" target="_blank" href="https://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/player/Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.?utm_source=Shareasale&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_term=kw--Floyd_Mayweather_Memorabilia|cpn--no_coupon|offer--no_offer&utm_content=L--Boxing|t--all_boxing|p--Floyd_Mayweather_Jr.|pc--Collectibles_and_Memorabilia|ag--NoGender&utm_campaign=dest--www_sportsmemorabilia_com|creatv--Text_Link|date--9142015|geo--NoGeo&SSAID=720398&sscid=41k3_3sw5v">Floyd Mayweather of the MMA … I mean, I mean it’s okay to just say it, it’s not true. Never compare Conor McGregor to me, it’s a total disrespect. Once again, I’m an elephant. An elephant don’t beef with ants. An elephant is so large he don’t see ants.”

Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua and heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz are both set to return on December 10, 2016 in Manchester but the fight is not between them two. Joshua will be fighting against Eric Molina in the main event and Luis Ortiz will be on the undercard with an opponent to be announced. Just because they aren’t fighting now doesn’t mean that a fight down the road isn’t possible. Eddie Hearn promotes both fighters and has recently been talking about a possible fight between. According to Hearn, he is looking to put Joshua into the ring with Wladimir Klitschko first and then with Ortiz soon after.
“He (Ortiz) is ranked No 1 by the WBA and it’s likely that he will become the mandatory after Joshua-Klitschko and he’s now highly-ranked by the IBF as well. I’ve spoken to AJ about it and he wants to fight all the top guys, and he considers Ortiz to be one of the very top guys in the division. We are talking about potentially 10 to 12 months down the line,” said Hearn in an interview with Sky Sports.

Future basketball hall of famer LeBron James has donated $2.5 million to a Muhammad Ali Exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington. Earlier this year Muhammad Ali died on June 3rd at the age of 74-years-old. Jame said all athletes should show gratitude to the late Muhammad Ali. “Every professional athlete, regardless of race and gender, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Muhammad Ali,” said James in an interview with The Associated Press. “His legacy deserves to be studied and revered by every generation,”

George Groves is best known for his action packed fights against Carl Froch, but now he’s looking to get in the ring with Gennady Golovkin. Groves thinks that if or when Golovkin moves up in weight he is going to have trouble with the fighters at that weight class. “If there’s a massive fight to be made against Golovkin and my world title fight cannot be made of course I would have it. If he moves up to super-middleweight, there are a handful of guys up here who would give him nightmares – and I think he knows that.” said Groves in an interview with The Daily Star. “Against Kell Brook, Golovkin looked slow, flat-footed and took far too many punches. I think any super-middleweight out there is thinking ‘if Golovkin wants to step up, I’d do a job on him’.” Many fighters like to call out Golovkin but not many seem willing to actually step into the ring with him. When Golovkin comes knocking on Groves’ door will he answer or will he hide in fear?
Saturday (November 19, 2016)
Andre Ward won a controversial unanimous decision against Sergey Kovalev. In the earlier rounds of the fight Kovalev was winning the rounds and he even knocked down Ward in the second round with a clean shot. It was apparent in the early round that Kovalev’s power was too much for Ward. Nonetheless, in the face of diversity Ward made the right adjustments to be able to continue the fight. It looked like in the early round Ward didn’t mind standing in front of Kovalev but after Ward got a taste his power he started to box. In the second half of the fight Ward started to move around the ring more and he was making it difficult for Kovalev to land. There was several times in the fight where the two fighters would get tied up between themselves. At the end of the fight all three judges scored the fight 114-113 for Ward.
It looks like the judges gave Ward the benefit of the doubt in every round and that is what led to his victory. Already fans on social media are showing their disapproval of the decision. With so much controversy surrounding the fight it wouldn’t make sense not to have a rematch. In addition to the controversial ending, in the contract for Kovalev vs Ward there was a rematch clause in case Kovalev lost. It looks like Kovalev will be taking advantage of this and we will be seeing a rematch between the two. What do you think about the decision? Who do you think wins the rematch?
In the co-main event Maurice Hooker fought against Darleys Perez which ended in a tie. This fight like the main event also had a controversial ending. This was suppose to be a coming out party for Hooker to showcase his skills but he ended up getting a beating from Perez who was landing the harder punches and controlled the distance. Perez clearly won a majority of the rounds against Hooker. One judge gave the fight to Perez, another to Hooker, and the last judge gave the fight a tie. The Kovalev vs Ward fight is disputable but this fight was no doubt a robbery.
Before that Oleksandr Gvozdyk who beat Isaac Chilemba by TKO. Gvozdyk broke down Chilemba round by round. Chilemba blames the loss on his right hand which was injured in the third round. Nonetheless, Gvozdyk stopped Chilemba, which is something that Sergey Kovalev was not able to do. It looks like Gvozdyk will be a new top contender at light heavyweight who might expect a fight with Ward or a Kovalev in the future.
In the first televised fight of the night Curtis Stevens beat James De La Rosa by unanimous decision. In the first three round Stevens was throwing and landing hard punches and it looked like the fight wasn’t going to go the full ten round. Starting in the fourth Stevens slowed down and stopped throwing the same power punches he was in the earlier rounds. It look suspicious and it turned out Stevens had hurt his hand in the fourth round. De La Rosa started raking up rounds and it looked like he had a good chance to pull off an upset. Luckily for Stevens, he pulled off enough round to win the decision.

Sergey Kovalev suffered a controversial loss to Andre Ward on Saturday night and fans of the sport are demanding a rematch. Fortunately for Kovalev there is a rematch clause in the contract that Ward signed. It looks like Kovalev and his team will be exercising the rematch clause immediately. Kovalev’s promoter Kathy Duva said that she will absolutely be using the rematch clause. “We want to get him back in the ring as soon as possible to right this wrong.” said Duva in an interview with BoxingScene.com. As of now there is no when or where but it is almost a sure thing that the rematch is happening. Who do you think wins the rematch?
Monday (November 21, 2016)
Last week Claressa Shields made her pro-debut in women’s boxing; Shields is known for winning gold in the 2016 Olympics in women’s boxing. Saturday night Shields beat Franchon Crews by unanimous decision in a four round fight. Women’s boxing has had very little coverage compared to men’s boxing but Shields hopes to change that. “You know, I’m just trying to go out there and give my best performance, like, every fight and they’ll take to women’s boxing and they’ll take to me.” said Shields in an interview with TheUndefeated.com. “And they’ll put me on more cards and, hopefully, in a year or two, I’ll be the main event here on HBO.” Ronda Rousey made women’s MMA interesting for the whole country, can Shields do the same for women’s boxing?
