DANNY GARCIA VS. SAMUEL VARGAS IS OFFICIAL!

By Boxing Scene

Philadelphia, PA (October 12th, 2016)– WBC welterweight world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia will host a press conference tomorrow in Philadelphia to announce his ring return on Saturday, November 12, in a non-title fight against Colombia’s Samuel Vargas (25-2, 13 Kos) that headlines Premier Boxing Champions on Spike from Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

According to PBC, Garcia’s fight against Vargas is the final hurdle before his highly anticipated welterweight world title unification showdown against undefeated WBA champion Keith Thurman planned for the first quarter of 2017.

Garcia will also detail a charity partnership as he looks to give back to his hometown throughout the promotion. Information about specific events and how you can join Garcia in supporting the city of Philadelphia will be announced at the press conference.

In addition to Garcia and Vargas, undefeated rising star Jarrett Hurd, unbeaten prospect Omar Douglas and local prospects Thomas Velasquez, Jeffrey Torres, Kyrone Davis, Milton Santiago and Antonio Dubose will be in attendance at Thursday’s press conference as the undercard will be announced.

Garcia (32-0, 18KOs) has been out of the ring since January, when he captured the vacant WBC welterweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero. He was initially being moved to face former champion Andre Berto on October 15th. Berto claimed that Garcia never wanted to sign the contract. Then Garcia was slated to face John Molina, who was going to move up from junior welterweight and was coming off a big win over Ruslan Provodnikov, and that fight fell through as well.

Garcia’s manager Al Haymon was applying a lot of pressure on him to face Thurman in the fall. Because of his inactivity, Garcia wanted at least one tuneup fight before moving forward with a unification against Thurman, a fight reportedly agreed up for early 2017.

Vargas has fought several times as high as junior middleweight and won is last five fights, but he was destroyed by Errol Spence in a four round knockout loss last April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. His other defeat came in 2013 by decision in Mexico.
