GENNADY GOLOVKIN VS. DANNY JACOBS TARGETED FOR DECEMBER 10th
New York, NY (September 23, 2016)– Canelo Alvarez’s fractured right thumb has changed HBO’s fall schedule which he suffered in his win over Liam Smith last Saturday.
Now HBO has decided to work on Gennady Golovkin vs. Danny Jacobs on December 10th at Madison Square Garden. The original date was scheduled for November 26th. The cancellation of the Canelo fight opens up the HBO budget to help pay for the Golovkin vs. Jacobs fight.
“That was Canelo’s date and we’re shooting for that date now for GGG,” Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions told ESPN.com on Thursday night.
Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs), who stopped Kell Brook in the fifth round for his 17th title and recorded his defense with his 23rd consecutive knockout on Sept. 10 at the sold-out O2 Arena in London.
The fight being targeted for Golovkin is his mandatory defense against WBA Regular titleholder Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) who retained his belt for the fourth time by knocking out Sergio Mora in the seventh round of their rematch on Sept. 9.
The WBA gave Golovkin and Danny Jacob’s adviser, Al Haymon 30 days to negotiate and 12o day to schedule this fight or it will go to a purse bid.
“Hopefully, we can work out the details soon for Jacobs,” Loeffler said.
HBO declined to discuss the matter.
