ANDRE WARD VS. ALEXANDER BRAND PREVIEW

By Victor O. Garcia, Real Combat Media Head Boxing Video Reporter

Oakland, California (August 5, 2016)— This Saturday night, top pound-for-pound fighter Andre “SOG” Ward (29-0, 15 KOs), will take on Colombian fighter Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs), before he takes on his biggest challenge yet,  Russian superstar Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev. The fight will take place in Ward’s hometown at the Oracle Arena, and it will be televised live on HBO.

Andre Ward is back fighting in his native city of Oakland, Ca. His last fight against former undefeated Cuban Fighter Sullivan Barrera, went to the distance and in which Andre won a lopsided unanimous decision. After his victory over Barrera, the boxing world received the good news. Ward signed a contract to fight Sergey Kovalev in November. Before the fight can take place, both fighters were given a chance to fight one more “tune-up” fight before they square off face-to-face in November.

Kovalev faced tough challenger  Issac Chilemba last month and succeeded with defeating the South Africa fighter. Now is Andre Ward’s turn. His challenger is Colombian power-puncher Alexander Brand, who has knocked out five out of his last six opponents.

Andre Ward and Alexander Brand were scheduled to fight each other back in November of last year, in the Canelo-Cotto undercard in Las Vegas. The fight was called off due to a knee injury Ward suffered during camp.

Brand is not a high ranked fighter and doesn’t have a top resume, but he is no push over. His most notable fight is against top Super Middleweight and the WBC Super Middleweight Champion Badou Jack. The fight ended in a split-decision in favor Jack. Brand also fought in the 2003 Pan-American Games, where he won a bronze medal.

The reality of this fight is Alexander Brand is a tough opponent, but he is not a huge threat to Ward. I still do not see how this fight will prepare Andre Ward for his most important fight of his career. It is more of a “stay busy” fight before his war with Kovalev. Andre Ward should be able to end this fight in the mid-rounds. Especially to prove a point to Kovalev who will be ringside.

Alexander Brand knows his underdog status, but he feels he has a mission and that is to give the fans a great show.

“All I want to do is give a good show and make sure that I give that to my fans here in Oakland. I want to have a good fight and work hard. It’s really a true honor to be in the ring with a champion like Andre Ward.” Said Brand.

“I’m excited about the future. I want to be the lightweight champion of the world, a two division champion. Everyone knows that, but it’s impossible for me to overlook this man (Brand). I’m not built like that. I wasn’t raised like that. I wasn’t groomed like that. As a young fighter, I don’t operate like that. This man is coming, this is his super bowl. Because this is his super bowl, it has to be my super bowl. My ribs are showing, I’m hungry. I’ll see you all Saturday night.” Said Andre Ward.
