Edgar Garcia Tops Valentin Leon, Wins WBF North America Title

Cadereyta, Mexico (July 11th, 2016)– On Saturday night, July 9, Edgar “Dragoncito” Garcia captured the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) North American Super Flyweight title in Cadereyta, Mexico when he defeated rugged veteran fellow countryman Valentin “Picoco” Leon.

On a show promoted by Uppercut Promotions, Garcia was forced to deal with dirty tactics from Leon, who hit him low and with rabbit punches several times from the very first round, trying to use his experience to discourage his younger foe.

But Garcia showed poise and good boxing skills, winning the first four before an accidental clash of heads in round five opened a big gash on the forehead of Leon. Referee Cesar Garcia took him to the ringside doctor, who after inspecting the injury decided it was safe to continue.

However, Leon refused to fight, and after some back-and-forth discussions Cesar Garcia officially disqualified Leon, declaring Edgar Garcia (no relation!) the new WBF North America Champion. Time of disqualification was 2:30 of round five.

In winning his careers first professional title, Garcia improved his record to 12-2 (6), while 37-year-old Leon drops to 38-32-3 (21) in a career that started in 1999 and brought him several regional titles along the way, and fights against big names such as Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, Hernan Marquez, Giovani Segura and Brian Viloria.

Judges assigned for the fight was Eleazar Luna, Luciano Rocha and Juan Angel Garcia. All had Edgar Garcia ahead by 40-36. World Boxing Federation (WBF) Supervisor was Raul Wilhelmy.
