Shafikov Stops Herring in Tenth Round of ESPN Lightweight War! July 4th Weekend

Reading, PA (July 3rd, 2016)– In the televised ESPN main event of a nine bout card promoted by Premier Boxing champions and King’s Promotions at Santander Arena, Reading, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, July 2, 2016, lightweight southpaw Denis Shafikov stopped a nitty-gritty  and tough prospect, Jamel Herring, in the tenth and final round, when Herring’s corner stopping the contest and protected their fighter from further punishment.

 

Shafikov, 37-2-1 with 19 knockouts, Miass, Russia, overcame height and reach disadvantage to get inside on Herring, cut off the ring, and work the head and body of Herring consistently to break him down. Shafikov did best when Herring was trapped along or near the ropes, leaving himself vulnerable to power head shots. A Shafikov overhand power right sent Herring, 15-1 with eight knockouts, Cincinnati, Ohio, bouncing off the ropes backwards, with one glove touching the canvas, ruled a knockdown in round two.

 

Herring had good lateral movement, but his problem was he could not shake Shafikov’s pressure all night and kept getting hit too much, though his chin was solid and he landed some counters. Shafikov kept coming, and Herring had nowhere to hide. Shafikov gave Herring a brutal beating in rounds 8 and 9. Herring indicated his desire to continue. The end came after the tenth and final round started, when Shafikov was hitting Herring with power shots at will, causing Herring’s corner to stop the contest and spare their fighter from further punishment.

 

Result: Denis Shafikov TKO 10 Jamel Herring, Lightweights (0:36)

Referee: Gary Rosato. Herring was down in the second round.

Teddy Atlas provided ESPN commentary. There were no upsets on the nine bout card. In the final walkout swing untelevised bout, local super welterweight Erik Spring of Reading, and James Robinson of York, Pennsylvania, battled toe-to-toe to a spirited six round draw.
