Showtime or One Time ? Thurman and Porter Slugfest Barclays CBS DiBella Preview

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Brooklyn, NY (June 23rd, 2016)– On Saturday, June 25, 2016, in the main event of a nine bout card at Barclays Center promoted by Premier Boxing Champions and DiBella Entertainment, televised on CBS, Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman will defend his World Boxing Association world Welterweight title against challenger Shawn ‘Showtime’ Porter, the former IBF World champion. Thurman is 5’7 ½” to Porter’s 5’7”. Might, not height, will determine the outcome.

Porter will attempt to win a technical battle on points by outworking Thurman. Robert Guerrero, Leonard Bundu, Jan Zavick, and Edvan Dos Santos Barros are the four fighters who have taken Thurman the distance, Bundu and Guerrero in WBA world title bouts. At 26-0 with 22 knockouts, Clearwater, Florida, Thurman is the best pound for pound fighter in the world at 147 pounds, and that includes Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Porter, 26-1-1 with 16 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada, has been out of the ring for a year, and got decked by Adrien Broner in the 12th and final round in the same Barclays ring. He has gone the distance in technical style bouts 12 times.

Thurman and Porter is not the even match it seems to be. Port may survive, but Thurman will be the busier and harder punching of the two. Thurman will either stop Porter late, or outpoint him if he fights more cautiously. Thurman is angling for a superfight with Danny Garcia, Gavin Rees, Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley, Errol Spence Jr., or Floyd. Super fights are where it’s at, the big money. Porter would have to knock Thurman out to get that lucky. Porter is a great fighter. He is, however, not better than Thurman. Porter would have to fight the technical fight of the century. If Broner knocked Porter down, Thurman will do it too.

The reality of the situation is the busier fighter will be the one who breaks the other one down. Keith Thurman will try to cut off the ring, walk Shawn Porter down, and keep him on the defensive, while dominating the punch count. It’s shocking for his size how well Porter boxes, and Thurman will have to elevate his game one notch up to come out on top. The winner of this bout will be considered the best 147 pound welterweight in the world.

Super welterweight Jarrett Hurd, 17-0 with 11 knockouts, Accokeek, Maryland, is predicted to win by late round knockout over Oscar Molina, 13-0-1 with 10 knockouts, Norwalk, California. Southpaw super lightweight Regis Prograis, 17-0 with 14 knockouts, is favored to win by 10 round decision over Columbian Luis Eduardo Flores, 21-3 with 17 knockouts. Light heavyweight prospect David Benevidez, El Bandera Roja, 14-0 with 13 knockouts Phoenix, Arizona, is favored to win by eight round decision over Congo fighter Francy Ntetu, 16-0 with three knockouts, now fighting out of Chicoutimi, Quebec.

Polish heavyweight prospect Adam Kownocki, 13-0 with 10 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, is favored to win by late round stoppage over Jesse Barbosa, 11-1-1 with seven knockouts, Hyannis, Massachusetts. Brooklyn female featherweight Heather Hardy, 16-0 with four knockouts, is favored to win by eight round decision over 8-1 Kirstie Simmons of Aurora, Colorado, two minute rounds.

In preliminary bouts, super lightweight prospect Jonathan ‘Maravilla’ Alonzo, 9-0 with four knockouts, Madrid, Spain, is favored to win by sic round decision over Anthony ‘Sweet’ Jones, 13-5 with seven knockouts, Los Angeles, California. Jones is coming down from super welterweight to fight Alonzo, and could be stronger in the lower weight class.

4-0 New York City welterweight prospect Josue Vargas is favored to win by knockout within two rounds over 3-5 Oklahoma journeyman Brian Jones. 2-0 super welterweight prospect Nicklaus Flaz of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and 1-6 Mack Babb of Brooklyn, New York is a tossup. Babb has more experience, and both of Flaz’ opponents were winless.

On Saturday June 25, 2016, doors will open for the event 5 P.M., with the first prelim bout at 5:40 P.M. Tickets for the event are still available at the Barclays Box Office in Brooklyn, or in advance via Ticketmaster at 1-800-653-8000, or buy your advance tickets online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0000508F0C74A68B?brand=barclays&camefrom=cfc_BARCLAYS_CTR_THURMANPORTER Ringside seats are $500 and $399, lower bowl seating is $249 and $79, and upper bowl seating is $49 and $32.
