Shane Mosley Falls Short In WBA Interim Bout

By Jason Gonzalez, Arizona/Nevada Boxing Correspondent

Glendale, Arizona (May 29th, 2016)– On Saturday night, May 29, 2016, on CBS Sports Shane Mosley (49-9-1) took on the WBA Welterweight Interim Champion David Avanesyan who is now (22-1-1). The fight took place in Glendale, Arizona promoted by Go Box Promotions. Avanesyan won the fight by unanimous decision, the scorecards read: (117-110), (117-110), (114,113). Avanesyan retains his WBA Interim title and is now in line to face the winner of Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter.

In the beginning of the fight Shane Mosley looked sharp, he boxed smart, and it looked as if he was on his way to a title shot. As the fight went on it looked like Mosley was progressively slowing down and he started fighting sloppy. Instead of boxing smart Mosley started throwing wild punches. In the post fight press conference Mosley said his plan was to go in there and box in the early round and then press for the knockout in the later round. Mosley’s power was not enough to put down Avanesyan.

In the 8th round Mosley was wobbled by one of Avanesyan’s punches and for a moment it looked like Mosley was in big trouble but he made it through the round. Several times throughout the fight the referee warned Mosley he would take away a point for low blows. In the 10th round the referee kept his promise and took away a point away from Mosley for another low blow.

During the fight Avanesyan was doing a better job of staying composed and finding the target which something that you would expect from the older and more experienced Shane Mosley. Mosley’s loss against Avanesyan begs the question “should Shane Mosley retire?” Mosley fought a good fight and he certainly doesn’t look 44-years-old yet. Mosley was able to hold his own during the fight and maybe enough to prove that he might have another couple fights in him. He said he is looking for a fight against Marquez or Cotto. Either fight for Shane Mosley would be very difficult but it would make good money.

As for Avanesysan, he is looking for the fight against the winner of Shawn Porter against Keith Thurman. Is David Avanesyan ready for either of those fighters? Avanesyan had a very close fight with a 44-year-old Shane Mosley, how could he take on the young and elite of the division? We must respect Avanesyan for his win tonight but the odds are looking against him to win the full WBA title.

Also on the card tonight was Mosley’s son Shane Mosley Jr. (7-1) who won a majority decision against Roberto Yong (5-8-2). Don’t let Yong’s record fool you because it sure did fool Mosley Jr. into a tough fight. Yong boxed  smart in a close fight. Mosley Jr. was wobbled several times throughout the fight and looked on the verge of being knocked down. In the end Mosley Jr. won enough rounds to pull off a victory and he continues his journey to fill his father’s shoes.
