CANELO SAYS HE WILL FIGHT GGG AT 160 AFTER MASSIVE KO OF AMIR KHAN

By Victor O. Garcia, Real Combat Media Head Boxing Rankings Panelist

Las Vegas, Nevada (May 7, 2016)— The new T-Mobile Arena hosted its first ever boxing event. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) via a vicious knock out in the sixth round in front of 16,540 fans.

From the beginning, many people saw this fight as a mismatch, since Amir Khan had to move up to middleweight from welterweight. In the beginning of the fight, Khan seemed like he can actually pull this off. He boxed well and connect clean shots. He looked focused and fought smart which was causing Canelo to get a bit frustrated. It was until the fourth round when Canelo began to connect well to the body of Khan, in hopes to slow him down. The adjustment seem to work since Khan was slowing down and dropped his guard down.

Later in the sixth round after making improvements to adjust to the speed of the elusive Khan, a nice feint to the body and a powerful right hand coming at full speed from Canelo, landed beautifully on Amir Khan, knocking out the British fighter.

“He is a fighter and I knew things would be complicated from the beginning, but I knew they will come to my favor as the fight went on. People have known me only for my power. I have many qualities in the ring and I showed that. I think people saw more of me tonight. Someone that comes to box gives you more trouble and someone that comes right in is a little more easier.” Said Canelo after the fight

In regards to the possibility showdown with Gennady Golovkin, Canelo invited GGG into the ring and said,

“I invited him into the ring. Like we say in Mexico “we don’t fuck around” I don’t fear anyone; we don’t come to play in this sport. I fear no one in this sport. Right now I will put on the gloves and fight him.”

During the final press conference, Canelo also stated,

“I have no problem fighting Golovkin at a full 160lbs.”

Amir Khan missed the presser, due to having to get checked out at the local hospital, but he did sent a message.

“I want to thank everyone.” Said Amir Khan. “I think it’s time for Canelo to step up to GGG, just like I stepped up to fight him. I tried as much as I could and trained really hard for this fight. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the result that I wanted. Although I feel strong at this weight, I am a naturally a lighter fighter and plan to go back down to welterweight. But, I like to challenge myself and that is why I took this fight. I want to be the best, but to be the best I have to fight the best.”

Lemieux vs Tapia

In the co-man event, David Lemieux (35-3, 32KOs) defeats Glen Tapia (23-3, 15KOs) via stoppage in the fourth round and could be on the road towards a title shot against Canelo Alvarez.

Hall of Famer and Trainer of the Year Glen Tapia’s corner man Freddy Roach, decided to stop the fight.

“He was getting hit too much. He wasn’t doing what we planned to do and when I saw him go down, I knew what I had to do to protect my fighter. He was taking too many punches.” Said Roach.

After the fight, David Lemieux said,

“This victory means the world to me,” said David Lemieux. “It proves all the doubters that Lemieux is back. When I first got offered this fight, I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. We made sure to have the best training camp possible and within the first round I knew I was dominating. I knew after the first round that I would knock him out. I’m ready to be among the best in the middleweight division and become a world champion again.”

Glen Tapia also had some things to say,

“I’ll be back,” said Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia. “This wasn’t my day at all. He got me from the first round. I kept thinking that id get started but I never did. I’m ready to come back. I took a big chance and it didn’t go my way but I’m not done yet.”

Mauricio Herrera vs Frankie Gomez

Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7KOs) loses by unanimous decision in a ten round bout to top prospect Frankie Gomez (21-0, 13KOs)

The moment has come for Frankie Gomez to prove what he has to offer in the sport of boxing and he did it with good fashion when he defeated top veteran fighter Mauricio Herrera.

“It feels good to get this victory,” said Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez. “I trained really hard and it paid off. I’m ready to take on my next challenge and take on the best at 140. I want to thank my fans, and I’m glad I was able to put on a good show for them.”

“It wasn’t my night,” said Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera. “I never give up and my fans know that. I hope to be back in vegas soon because I’ll go anywhere for a fight.”

Stevens vs Teixeira

The return of Curtis Stevens (28-5, 21KOs) was the first televised fight of the Canelo-Khan undercard and ended in his favor by defeating Patrick Teixeira (26-1, 22KOs) via TKO in the second round.

“The name of the game is to knock people out and that’s what I did tonight,” said Curtis Stevens. “I feel great to get back into the game after my one and a half year break. I really want Lemieux, but I will take whatever I can get. My head is right, and I’m ready to take on whoever.”

“Throughout the fight, I didn’t know if I was winning or losing,” said Patrick Teixeira. “This fight was not how I expected it to go.”
