GARCIA VS. GUERRERO REJECTED FOR THE WBA SUPER CHAMPIONSHIP & MAYWEATHER WILL BE STRIPPED OF WBA CHAMPIONSHIP
Los Angeles, CA (January 8th, 2016)– The World Boxing Association will remove Floyd Mayweather Jr. from his position as the reigning world champion at welterweight and junior middleweight at the end of the month. Mayweather retired last September after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The sanctioning body received a request from Premier Boxing Champions to sanction an upcoming welterweight fight, between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero, for the vacant ‘super’ WBA championship at 147-pounds. Garcia-Guerrero takes place on January 23rd as PBC’s headline fight for their series debut on FOX. WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. revealed to ESPN Deportes that he denied the request.
