Guillermo Jones Heavyweight Wild Card
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
New York, NY (December 22, 2015)– He’s big at 226 pounds. He’s bad. Now, he’s back. Guillermo Jones is back as a heavyweight, after two and a half years out of the ring, at age 43. The former world cruiserweight champion is like another Shannon Briggs looking for a ‘something’ world title shot past the point where a heavyweight should be looking for a world title shot. Jones defeated heavyweight Daniel Cota by 10 round decision in Panama on November 20, 2015.
Jones, 40-3-2 with 21 knockouts, Colon, Panama, debuted in 1993, and fought twice for the WBA super welterweight world title in 1998. Jones is undefeated in world cruiserweight title bouts with four wins and one draw, after moving up in weight.
The big question is what do you do with Guillermo Jones and Don King?
In all probability, if Deontay Wilder or one of the other paper champions needs a last minute opponent, Guillermo Jones could be a candidate. Most boxing experts would still say Jones would be better off returning to the cruiserweight division. Don King still moves mountains. King can maneuver Jones into world title contender for a share of the world heavyweight title by getting him a step up bout against somebody. The Guillermo Jones comeback, coming again soon to a television screen near you.
