Boxing had a great year in 2015. The sport rebounded from a poor 2014 with many great fighters breaking records. 2015 also was the first time in 30 years that boxing returned to network television with the development of Premier Boxing Champions. It was a very tough choice picking the 2015 Real Combat Media Boxer of the Year.  Here were the finalists. Comment below as to who you think should of won this award.

Keith Thurman: With two wins this year over Roberto Guerrero in March and Luis Collazo in July, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) had a strong 2015. The question remains if Keith Thurman will become an elite fighter in 2016 and defeat Shawn Porter.  This fight has not been officially announced yet, however expect this fight to be made in either February or March of 2016.

Terence Crawford: Terence (27-0, 19Kos) is coming off a solid TKO performance over Dierry Jean, who was never stopped and he stopped the tough Puerto Rican fighter Thomas Dulorme in 2015 at 140lbs.  Terence is arguably the number 1 fighter at 140lbs. Will he fight Manny Pacquiao in 2016 or the #2 ranked junior welterweight, Viktor Postal in 2016? The Nebraska native seems to have a bright future going into 2016.

Sergey Kovalev" src="http://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.10430565.1447952124!/httpImage/image.JPG_gen/derivatives/display_960/image.JPG" alt="His nickname is " width="562" height="372" />

Sergey Kovalev:  Sergey (28-0-1, 25 KOs)  had a third-round TKO of Nadjib Mohammedi in July and he defeated 175lb contender, Jean Pascal in a fight of the year candidate earlier in 2015.  Sergey will rematch Jean Pascal in 2016 and if he gets past Pascal, he will have a Andre Ward fight late 2016 or possibly the WBC champ Adonis Stevenson in June. HBO and PBC will have to come to an agreement for this fight to happen. A Stevenson vs. Kovalev fight has been talked about for over 3 years.

At long last, Mexican Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs)

Saul Canelo Alvarez: The Mexican fighter Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated former WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. He also scored an impressive 3rd round KO over James Kirkland in May. 2016 remains a mystery for Canelo. There are talks of Canelo fighting possibly Gabe Rosado or David Lemieux in April. Later in 2016, he will have a possible PPV showdown with Gennady Golovkin. Will this fight even happen? Canelo has requested a catchweight for the WBC middleweight title and GGG has not agreed to these stipulations at this time.

Roman GonzalezWBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) is on top the Ring pound for pound rankings, a rarity for a 112-pounder. New York fans had to be impressed by a decisive ninth-round TKO over Brian Viloria, who was floored once, in their recent bout at MSG. Gonzalez also defeated Valentin Leon and Edgar Sosa in an impressive 2015 campaign. Will Gonzalez fight Japanese star Naoya Inoue (9-0 8 Kos) in the near future?

Floyd Mayweather: Now retired, Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 Kos) had a solid 2015 with a win over Manny Pacquiao in May a fight that tool close to 6 years to make. Floyd made around 300 million dollars in a fight that shattered PPV records which sold an estimated 4.3 million PPV buys. However in September, Floyd decided to take an easier route and defeated Andre Berto by a unanimous decision who has lost 4 of his last 7 fights. Floyd finished 2nd in the 2015 Real Combat Media Boxer of the Year ballot.

Gennady Golovkin: The WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is the winner of the Real Combat Media Boxer Of the Year for 2015. He ran his streak to 21 straight stoppages with an eighth-round TKO over David Lemieux to add the IBF title to his collection. GGG also defeated title contenders Willie Monroe Jr and the UK’s Martin Murray earlier in 2015 by stoppages.  In 2016 and beyond, GGG will look to become a legend in the sport of boxing and could meet Canelo Alvarez later in 2016.
