Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (10/18/15)

“BONUS EDITION”

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.

Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) vs. David Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs)

Fight fans have been salivating over this matchup between two of boxing’s biggest punchers since it was announced in July.  Despite being mostly untested against top-shelf opposition, many boxing observers hail Gennady Golovkin as one of today’s best in the sport.  The undefeated WBA, IBO and WBC “Interim” middleweight champion will be taking a big step on Saturday in cementing his status as a top dog if he can get passed Canadian bruiser David Lemieux.

One of the most feared and exciting fighters on the planet, GGG is a high-action, one-punch knockout machine.  He has a ring style resembling a killer robot.  Basically, Golovkin is always moving forward on his prey, eating shots for breakfast, while closing the distance before unleashing his fury.  Golovkin is a selective, economical puncher who throws with purpose and deadly intentions.  He wields a stiff jab that he employs as an offensive weapon and he carries fight-ending artillery in both hands.  The Olympic silver medalist has a reliable chin, possesses quality footwork and ring generalship and is an excellent strategist.  It is his ability to cut off the ring and apply constant pressure, together with his explosive power that makes GGG one of the most exciting fighters of our time.  Gennady was last seen in action with a stoppage win over Willie Monroe Jr. in May.  His fan base has grown quickly since he came to fight for the first time in the United States in 2012, as he stormed through a series of top contenders, knocking out the likes of former titleholder Daniel Geale, Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin, Gabriel Rosado and Curtis Stevens.  GGG has knocked out 20 opponents in a row, including all 14 in his title defenses.

David Lemieux is a thick-limbed slugger who also carries devastating power in both hands.  He’s a very quick starter with a fan-pleasing style, running out of the corner with the opening bell and ready to destroy his opponent.  While Lemieux’s endurance had been subject to question following his back to back losses to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine in 2011, who both took the Montreal native late into the fights before earning their wins, Lemieux proved he could swim in the deep end after his 10th round TKO victory over Gabriel Rosado in December and his Unanimous Decision win over Hassan N’Dam this past June.

What a matchup!!!!  Two forward-moving demolition machines squaring off under the electrifying atmosphere of a full house at the iconic Madison Square Garden.  Big drama show, indeed.  Love it!!!!  The big story here is the destructive power both of these grinders wield.  But will this weekend’s confrontation be an all out assault with an early night for one of the fighters or a drawn out war of smarts and conditioning?  I honestly believe that most boxing fans are seriously underestimating what Lemieux brings to the table.  He is a live underdog who may ask some tough questions of the mighty Golovkin, especially early in the fight.  Sure, Lemieux can and should box, but it would be foolish for Lemieux to try and stick/move against a great ring general like Golovkin.  I think Lemieux comes out swinging at the opening bell working to put GGG on his back foot and looking to end the contest early.  But, expect Golovkin’s refined boxing skills, timing and speed to keep the brawler under control and to rack up the punishment until the Canadian is ripe for a stoppage.  My Pick: Golovkin wins by a 7th Round TKO.

Here are my picks for some other fights taking place this week: Gerald Washington (16-0, 11KOs) over Amir Mansour (22-1, 16KOs) by Majority Decision.  Michael Hunter (9-0, 6KOs) over Jason Douglas (11-5, 4KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Devon Alexander (26-3, 14KOs) over Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Lee Selby (21-1, 8KOs) over Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39KOs) by Split Decision.  Ivan Redkach (18-1, 14KOs) over Erick Martinez(11-2-1, 5KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.  Joseph Parker (15-0, 13KOs) over Kali Meehan (42-5, 32KOs) by an 8th Round TKO.  Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16KOs) over Nathan Cleverly (29-2, 15KOs) by a 9th Round TKO.  Koki Kameda (33-1, 18KOs) over Kohei Kono (30-8-1, 13KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Patrick Szymanski (14-0, 9KOs) over Richard Gutierrez (28-16-1, 17KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Seanie Monaghan (25-0, 16KOs) over Donovan George (25-4-2, 22KOs) by Split Decision.  Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37KOs) over Brian Viloria (36-4, 22KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Luis Ortiz (22-0, 19KOs) over Matias Ariel Vidondo (20-1-1, 18KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.  Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13KOs) over Eamonn O’Kane (14-1-1, 5KOs) by an 8th Round TKO.  Lamont Peterson (33-3-1, 17KOs) over Felix Diaz (17-0, 8KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Prichard Colon (16-0, 13KOs) over Terrell Williams (14-0, 12 KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.  Jessie Magdaleno (21-0, 15KOs) over Vergel Nebran (14-9-1, 9KOs) by a 3rd Round TKO.  Donnie Nietes (36-1-4, 21KOs) over Juan Alejo (21-3, 13KOs) by a 7th Round TKO.  Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14KOs) over Dario Fabian Pucheta (20-2, 11KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Vincent Feigenbutz (20-1, 19KOs) over Giovanni De Carolis (23-5, 11KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Kubrat Pulev (20-1, 19KOs) over George Arias (56-13, 42KOs) by a 2nd Round TKO.  Sam Eggington (16-2, 9KOs) over Dale Evans (10-2-2, 3KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22KOs) over Jason Welborn (17-3, 6KOs) by a 7th Round TKO.  Khalid Yafai (16-0, 11KOs) over Jason Cunningham (17-2, 6KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.
