Joey Dawejko Scores! 75 Second Victory on Las Vegas ShoBox Card

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (August 29th, 2015)– Don King, the master of boxing, and Don King Productions were back at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center across from D Hotel & Casino, on Friday evening, August 28, 2015. Hard hitting Polish heavyweight Joey Dawejko recorded his sixth first round knockout in his last seven fights, stopping Natu Visinia in 75 seconds of the first round in the opening bout of a USA Showtime ShoBox: The New Generation televised card.

Natu Visinia was stopped in seven rounds by 39 year old Steve Cunningham last year. Truth be told, this reporter watched Visinia win a six round decision over Jon Bolden in Brooklyn last year in which Visinia appeared to rarely, if at all, throw a punch, let alone land one. Two judges had that bout 58-56 for Visinia, meaning limited Bolden would have had a majority draw if one more round had turned in his favor. The lack of Visinia’s offense in that bout raised questions as to how Visinia, a college educated Davis Tua lookalike from Samoa, would hold up in the face of a no nonsense hard hitting younger 25 year old heavyweight opponent like hungry Dawejko in outdoor 100 degree temperatures.

Answer: he didn’t.

One hard right hand power shot from Dawejko dropped Visinia to the canvas immediately. He got up, only to take a brutal pounding and a standing eight count on the ropes. It was on the ropes Dawejko knocked Visinia through, and finished him. Trainer Buddy McGirt deserves credit for staying with Dawejko and continuing to work with him. Given these temperatures, any power hitter would be well advised to dispose of his foe as quickly as possible. Television viewers did not even have time to sit down or get a cup of orange juice. Dawejko is 16-4-2 with nine knockouts, with six first round knockouts in his first seven bouts. Visinia, once ranked as the number two worldwide MMA amateur heavyweight, is 11-2 with nine knockouts, and is advised to stick with MMA after getting exposed like this.

Result: Joey Dawejko TKO 1 Natu Visinia, Heavyweights (1:15)
Visinia was down in the first round.
Visinia got a standing eight count in the first round.

Referees: Robert Byrd, Vic Drakulich, Russell Mora

DeCarlo Perez Win 10 Juan Ubaldo Cabrera, Middleweights
Scoring: 98-91, 98-91, 97-92 for Perez.

Let’s get serious here. Atlantic City, New Jersey fighter Perez, 15-3-1, is no GGG but at least is in top condition. Perez took this bout on only three weeks of notice. Dominican fighter Cabrera entered the ring at 23-0 with 15 knockouts since 2005, a padded record.
Two ringside judges were generous giving Cabrera one round. What does that tell you?
The result of this bout, in contradiction to other reporters, is certainly NOT an upset.

Trevor Bryan Win 10 Derric Rossy, Heavyweights
Bryan wins the vacant North American Boxing Federation Heavyweight title.
98-91, 98-91, 97-92 for Bryan.

Same scoring again. Rossy has fought seven ‘A’ level fighters in a row, and ‘beaten’ two of them, and got robbed more than that. Rossy went down in first round, then survived in the 100 degree heat. A good comparison for this bout would be the Larry Holmes versus Muhammad Ali ‘Doom in the Desert’ world heavyweight title bout outdoors in Las Vegas in 1980. Rossy, age 35, 30-10 with 14 knockouts, gave away nine years to the 26 year old Bryan, 16-0 with 11 knockouts. After a few rounds, both fighters were just in it to survive.

Sal Lopez Win 4 Rubin Swain, Featherweights
Scoring: 39-37, 39-37, 39-37 for 2-0 Lopez.
