Bloody Cornelius Lock Knocks Out Miskirtchian in Coney Island Main Event
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Brooklyn, NY (August 29, 2015)– A bloody Cornelius Lock, the Flatbush Brooklyn southpaw featherweight contender, bleeding profusely from a cut between the eyes from an accidental head butt after knocking down his opponent with a left hook, slammed a straight left hand to the jaw which knocked out former European Featherweight champion Alexander Miskirtchian of Belgium in the main event of The Brooklyn Brawl Boxing on the Beach ten bout card promoted by Salita Promotions at Brooklyn Cyclones MCU Park in Coney Island Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2015.
Though called an upset, the fight of the night bout was clearly a mismatch.
Lock, age 35, now 23-7-2, 15 knockouts, was attempting a comeback after 18 months of inactivity. Though listed at 5’7”, Lock looked a world taller inside the ring than the 5’6” Miskirtchian, now 25-4-1 with nine knockouts, Dinant, Belgium. Lock’s weight was 125.6 pounds, but was misstated as 135.6 on the program. Miskirtchian weighed 127.8 pounds.
The first round was closer, with the shorter Miskirtchian trying to bull rush his way inside on the taller Lock, and getting promptly tied up. In the second round, Lock began to accurately time Miskirtchian, moving forward and cutting off the ring, and tagging him with powerful straight jab combinations to the head and body while staying out of distance range. Miskirchian, unable to get inside or reach Lock with any punches, had no offensive answer or ‘Plan B’ once his original plan of attack was neutralized.
Miskirtchian, who went 12 rounds for the International Boxing Federation World Featherweight title against Evgeny Gradovich in Macao, China, in May 2014 and was ranked 10th in the world by the IBF and 13th in the world by the World Boxing Council, was in serious trouble as the third round began. His eyes and nose red, Miskirtchian helplessly got clubbed with power jabs and power shot hooks along the rope again and again. A clash of heads opened up a huge blood gushing cut between the eyes of Lock as Miskirtchaian came in close, and a Lock left hook which followed dropped Mirkirtchian. Referee Steve Willis was busy counting over Miskirtchian, and missed the clash of heads.
Lock, sensing the immediate urgency of the moment due to the flow of blood on his forehead, pounced on Miskirtchian as soon as the referee signaled the action could continue. A powerful straight left hand sent Miskirtchian, who was on unsteady legs, plunging backwards on his back to the canvas, knocked out. Despite the blood between his eyes, Lock was not in trouble at any time and the cut did not put him in jeopardy. It was just the accidental clash of heads occurred a split second immediately before the first knockdown, and as Miskirtchian was down on the canvas, Lock’s cut was missed.
Miskirtchian was making his first appearance outside of Europe. Promoter Dmitriy Salita stated after the bout he had a two fight option on Lock to fight for him with the win. After the bout, Lock took five stitches on the forehead to close the wound, and stated old scar tissue from previous bouts contributed to the forehead gash from the accidental butt.
Result: Cornelius Lock TKO 3 Alexander Miskirtchian, Featherweights
Time: 2:10 of the third round. Referee: Steve Willis. Referee waives a halt to the contest without a count, with Miskirtchian knocked down and out on the canvas on his back.
In a major preliminary bout to the main event on the undercard, Junior Anthony Wright of Chicago, Illinois, 14-1-1 with 11 knockouts, ranked 26th in the world by the World Boxing Council, knocked down Harvey ‘Candyman’ Jolly, 14-23 with seven knockouts, Nashville, Tennessee, in the sixth and final round, winning a six round unanimous decision. Jolly got a lucky break after the final round knockdown, when loose hand tape forced referee Steve Willis to stop the clock so the tape could be fixed, giving Jolly time to recover when he appeared ready to go near the end of the bout. Wright, coming off an IBO world title loss in Russia, appeared a bit nervous and was unable to throw his usual straight jabs, though Wright pressed the action and was busy in every round, keeping the heat on Jolly.
Noted trainer Rick Wilson was in the corner of Junior Wright. Jolly loaded up and landed several timed power right hands over Wright’s low left, but they had no apparent effect.
Result: Junoir Anthony Wright Win 6 Harvey Jolly, Cruiserweights
Scoring: 59-54, 59-54, 59-54 Wright. Referee: Steve Willis. Jolly was down in sixth round.
