Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (7/18/15)
By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host
Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.
His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.
For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.
Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32KOs) vs. Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24KOs)
The last time we saw Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the ring, he had just been stopped for the first time in his career. The ring was being littered with bottles from angry Chavez fans. It was a clinical dismantling put on Chavez by Andrzej Fonfara back in Aprl of this year. Heck, Chavez bizarrely proclaimed he had won the fight during the post-fight interview!!!! Indeed, it was that kind of night for the prodigy-turned-punch line with a famous last name. Some Boxing fans, including myself, argued that it was time to pull the plug on a grand experiment that was mostly marked by a lack of discipline and shoddy commitment to the sport. It culminated with a “No Mas” moment in front of thousands of angry Mexican fans at the StubHub Center. To all the haters who spilled gallons of beer on his head on the way out the door, I have one thing to say: He’s back….Damn!!!!
Chavez Jr. returns to the ring as the headliner of a Showtime card Saturday night at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas, against Marcos Reyes. Reyes has a solid record, but he’s fought mostly off-the-radar fights in his native Mexico against lackluster opposition. Make no mistake about it, he has nothing to lose here and a win over the son of Mexico’s greatest fighter would provide some serious bragging rights and a possible launching pad for his career.
Let’s get one thing straight: Chavez absolutely cannot afford a loss here. It would be a career-killer, or so you’d have to expect given how many chances he’s already had and squandered. Chavez is now under the tutelage of Robert Garcia, who joins the chorus line of high-profile trainers, joining Freddie Roach and Joe Goossen, to try and get the most from the talented but often disappointing fighter. Like I said, this is really an all-or-nothing affair. Chavez can’t lose. Well he can, but if he values his place in the sport, always a concern, he’d better not. I don’t know why, but my gut feeling tells me that Chavez shows up in some sort of decent shape Saturday night and takes care of business. Then, it’s on to relevant fights against the big boys like Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin. Never put the cart before the horse. One step at a time!!!! My Pick: Chavez wins by a 9th Round TKO.
Here are my picks for some other fights taking place this weekend: Antoine Douglas (17-0-1, 11KOs) over Istvan Szili (18-0-2, 8KOs) by Unanimous Decision. David Price (19-2, 16KOs) over Erkan Teper (14-0, 9KOs) by a 6th Round TKO. Carl Frampton (20-0, 14KOs) over Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (25-1-2, 15KOs) by a 10th Round TKO. Chris Arreola (36-4, 31KOs) over Fred Kassi (18-3, 10KOs) by a 5th Round TKO. McJoe Arroyo (16-0, 8KOs) over Arthur Villanueva (27-0, 14KOs) by Split Decision. Amir Imam (17-0, 14KOs) over Fernando Angulo (29-9, 16KOs) by a 5th Round TKO. Ik Yang (19-0, 14KOs) over Cesar Cuenca (47-0, 2KOs) by Unanimous Decision. Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22KOs) over Anthony Settoul (20-3, 8KOs) by a 6th Round TKO. Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28KOs) over Rober Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27KOs) by Majority Decision. Vincent Feigenbutz (19-1, 18KOs) over Mauricio Reynoso (15-1-1, 11KOs) by a 7th Round TKO. Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22KOs) over Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24KOs) by an 8th Round TKO. Darleys Perez (32-1, 20KOs) over Anthony Crolla (29-4-2, 11KOs) by an 11th Round TKO. Daniel Rosario (10-1, 9KOs) over Aaron Garcia (14-3-1, 10KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.
