Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (6/5/15)  – RECORD – (140-20)

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.

 Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) vs. Daniel Geale (31-3, 16KOs)
Cotto has been the king of Madison Square Garden for over 10 years.  This weekend he will make his debut at the Barclays Center.  Cotto defeated an “Injured” Sergio Martinez by a 10th round TKO last summer to win the WBC Middleweight Championship.  Sure, it was a great story for the sport of Boxing, but Cotto’s act is getting a little stale.  Sure, he is a great fighter.  We all know he is the only fighter from Puerto Rico to win belts in four different weight divisions.  However, all of a sudden he is acting like a Diva.  He has gone out of his way to avoid fighting Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.  Let me make one thing perfectly clear: Cotto is an overblown Junior Welterweight who stands 5’7″.  He is only fighting near 160 pounds because he lacks the discipline required to consistently make 147 pounds, which is the highest weight class he should be in.  Now there are serious questions as to whether Geale can make the 157 pound “Catchweight”.  Geale’s promoter Gary Shaw is livid and so should all Boxing fans.  That is my rant for today.  Now on to the fight itself.
Geale is a fighter who likes to keep busy and throw a lot of punches.  Sure, he got destroyed by GGG, but the lack of respect he is getting coming into this fight is amazing.  He lost two fights via split decision to Darren Barker and Anthony Mundine.  For the record, I had him winning both.  Heck, he beat Felix Sturm in Germany.  Enough said.  Basically, Geale is fighting with house money.  This is a fight no one expects him to win. He should fight like there is no pressure on him at all.  What hurts Geale is his lack of power.  Cotto will land brutal power shots to the body and then follow them up with violent shots to the head.  Geale might win some early rounds by using his jab and some movement.  But, Cotto will eventually wear him down.
Despite the fact that Cotto is fighting well above his natural weight class, like I said before, he’s facing a fighter who does not have the power to expose him.  This dynamic will be even more prominent with Geale likely struggling to make 157 pounds.  Cotto, on the other hand, has proved he’s capable of hurting fighters in this weight region.  Again, he battered a “Gimpy” and “Shot” Sergio Martinez to win the title in June 2014 and he beat up “Glorified Club Fighter” Delvin Rodriguez in the fight before that.  My hunch is that Cotto will start slow but then launch a vicious body attack on Geale.  I’m not a hater.  Just want Cotto to do the right thing.  Don’t waste my time.  Boxing fans all over the world know what you need to do next.  Just saying!!!!  My Pick: Cotto wins by a 7th Round TKO.
Here are my picks for some other fights taking place this weekend: Robert Guerrero (32-3-1, 18KOs) over Aron Martinez (19-3-1, 4KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Dominic Breazeale (14-0, 13KOs) over Yasmany Consuegra (17-0, 14KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.  Alfredo Angulo (22-5, 18KOs) over Delray Raines (19-10, 14KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Jesus Cuellar (26-1, 20KOs) over Vic Darchinyan (40-7-1-29KOs) by a 10th Round TKO.  Marvin Sonsona (19-1-1, 15KOs) over Jonathan Arrellano (15-5-2, 3KOs) by a 2nd Round TKO.
