Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (5/16/15)
By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host
Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.
His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.
For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.
Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.
Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs) vs. Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6KOs)
Boxing fans are hoping that Golovkin will get the major, high-profile fight he wants at middleweight this year. Honestly, I don’t believe Miguel Cotto will fight him, but I do think Saul Alvarez might. Personally, my dream scenario would be for Golovkin to move up to super middleweight and go after Andre Ward.
This is all a moot point if GGG doesn’t defeat Willie Monroe Jr. this weekend. Monroe Jr. has the style to give Golovkin a tough fight. He’s going to have a lot of success early in the fight using his jab and foot movement to make things much tougher for GGG than they’ve usually been.
I don’t believe Monroe Jr. has the power to keep Golovkin off of him and that’s going to make this a difficult fight for him to win. GGG is a patient and methodical fighter, who never allows himself to get too frustrated.
GGG also has very underrated boxing skills. He might not be able to hit Monroe Jr. as easily and as often as he would like. But make no mistake about it – he’s going hit Monroe Jr. and hurt him. Golovkin can change the outcome of a fight if he manages to connect with just a single good shot.
Call me crazy, but I can imagine Monroe Jr. extending the fight into the later rounds. However, after he has gotten a strong enough taste of Golovkin’s power in the earlier rounds, Monroe Jr. is going to hesitate and not throw back punches. This will make it progressively easier for Golovkin to eventually walk him down and score another victory by knockout.
My Pick: Golovkin wins by a 9th Round TKO.
