Brooklyn, NY (May 30th, 2015)– WBC Silver Welterweight Champion Amir “King” Khan(31-3 , 19kos) “needed” an impressive win against the substantial underdog and former WBO 140lb Champion Chris “The Professor” Algieri (20-2, 8kos) on the May 29, 2015 edition of Premier Boxing Champions PBC on Spike TV “Lights Out”. Khan, however did win by unanimous decision but upon research many fans and media felt the fight needed a second viewing to determine “if” maybe Algieri should have won.
The judges scored the fight 117-111, 117-111, and 115-113 all for Khan. Now the question is if Khan did enough to increase his chances of facing Floyd “Money” Mayweather(48-0 26kos) in Mayweather’s final bout under his Showtime/CBS contract this September 12, 2015. “Everyone knows I want Floyd next after all the talk about it, but when you wait and hope for something for this long it can set you back. I don’t want to overlook any other fighters, including Chris.” said Khan.
Algieri the New York native more than held his own against Khan and often times drew cheers from the pro-Khan crowd. Algieri aggressively walked Khan down and peppered him with right hands consistently. Khan’s left eye showed the damage. It was Khan, however who was landing the cleaner effective blows. Many ringside observers praised trainer John David Jackson for the work he’s done with Algieri in such a short time.
Jackson felt that Algieri had won but did acknowledge that he had to watch the tapes to confirm. Jackson said that the only card he agreed with “if” Khan did win was judge Don Ackerman’s 115-113 score.
Algieri had this to say after the fight “I thought I hurt him several times, but Khan’s a cagey fighter and he spins off. I guess the judges liked that tonight. I would think the cleaner, harder shots would get a little more respect.”
In the co-feature Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (28-0-1, 20kos) won the WBA Super World Super featherweight title by defeating Bryan Vasquez (34-2, 18kos) via unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 117-111, 117-111, and 116-112.
