Amir King Khan Decisions Algieri and Challenges 48-0 Floyd

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Brooklyn, NY (May 30th, 2015)– Amir ‘King’ Khan decisioned Chris Algieri over 12 rounds at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday evening, May 29, 2015, to retain his World Boxing council Silver Welterweight title, televised on Spike TV by Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions. Next up, according to Khan, should be 48-0 Floyd Mayweather Jr., Khan’s mega payday of paydays. However, it was not an easy road Khan had to get there.

Khan, now 31-3 with 19 knockouts, Bolton, England, has now won five straight main event bouts to reach the significant possibility of a 147 pound world title shot with Floyd. Khan stopped Carlos Molina in 10 rounds, then won 12 round decisions over Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and now Algieri. This win streak came right after Khan a 12 rounder to Lamont Peterson, and got stopped in four rounds by Danny Garcia.

Boxing fans might wonder if 25-0 Keith Thurman of Florida, 30-0 Kell Brook of England, 30-0 WBC-WBA Super Lightweight champion Danny Garcia of Philadelphia, or Lucas Martin Matthysse, the 37-3 Argentinian who holds the WBC Super Lightweight title and just beat Ruslan Provodnikov, or 22-0 Sadam Ali of Brooklyn could be better opponents for Floyd next. Amir Khan’s name was immediately called out after Floyd beat Pacman.

With GGG versus Carl Froch, and Badou Jack versus George Groves on the table in Great Britain, the British are coming. The Brits could build a mega card there, or Floyd could build a mega card in Las Vegas. It’s basically choice for Floyd, whatever he wants to do.

As for Algieri, now 20-2, eight knockouts, Huntington, New York, he has now lost to Manny Pacquiao and Khan and needs to find a win. After going down six times against Pacquiao, and going down twice against Provodnikov and coming back to win, his heart was unquestioned. Algieri’s game plan for Khan was better than Pacquiao, throwing more punches and landing some significant power shots to win at least three or four close rounds tops. Khan moved well enough and his cage was never rattled, outworking Algieri clearly.

Khan landed head shots in the first six rounds, but began to run from the round seven on, letting Algieri back into the not-so-close bout. Trainer Virgil Hunter got Khan to settle down better in rounds nine and ten and won them. Algieri chased rabbit feet Khan all night. Probably Khan will not be able to run against Floyd like he does with lesser boxers.

Overall Khan landed 218 of 609 punches for a 36 percent landing ratio. Algieri landed just slightly less with 199 of 703 punches landed for a 28% ratio.. Khan missed almost 400 punches, while Algieri missed over 500 punches. It was close and it wasn’t Khan’s best performance, but Khan got the job done. Scoring appeared correct, with Algieri not stealing any rounds in his hometown area. There were some empty seats at Barclays.

Result: Amir Khan Win 12 Chris Algieri, Welterweights
Khan retains WBC Silver Welterweight title
Scoring: 117-111, 117-111, 116-112 for Khan.
