Dr. Steelhammer Reigns Supreme

New York, NY (April 26th, 2015)– At 39 years of age, Wladimir Klitschko remains ‘Dr. Steelhammer’. The undisputed world heavyweight title is his for the keeping. In the main event at Madison Square Garden, on Saturday night, April 25, 2015, Dr. Klitschko retained his world heavyweight title with a 12 round unanimous decision over American challenger Bryant Jennings. The bout was not what one could call a challenge. British commentators on BoxNation termed the bout “rubbish” and focused their energies instead on a proposed bout between Klitschko against Tyson Fury in the near future.
Klitschko, now 64-3, 53 knockouts, Kiev, Ukraine, had more fans cheering for him than Jennings, now 19-1, 10 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Klitschko seemed larger than life against the smaller Jennings, who wore earmuffs for most of 12 rounds, and stood in front of Klitschko offering a target most of the time. Jennings did move well enough to keep Klitschko off balance and preventing from throwing his powerful right hand. Klitschko had to spend the night throwing left and right jabs which for the most part scored. Jennings appeared to just barely win the sixth round because he was a little busier, and Klitschko lost a point in round ten for holding, pushing, and all that jazz he has gotten away with in Germany in other title bouts for years without being penalized.Klitschko noted after the bout “It is what it is” and had no complaint with the scoring.
While Klitschko versus Jennings might have seemed competitive to those who know little about boxing, for those who do, Jennings completed an astounding accomplishment. Jennings took up the sport of boxing six years ago, and won nineteen consecutive bouts en route to a world title bout, amazing in such a short time span.
Klitschko showed nothing spectacular, just good basic all around boxing. Klitschko tied up, wrestled, pushed and held Jennings, to the point whenever he grabbed Jennings, Klitschko actually turned his back. Some of Jennings wild shots were silly misses. Jennings lacked the power in the last few rounds to take Klitschko out, and the scorecards were a farce. Judge Max DeLuca accurately scored the bout 118-109. Two other judges demonstrated ridiculous charity, scoring the bout 116-111, giving Jennings three rounds. Jennings felt the bout could have been scored either way, and stated Klitschko held too much. Jennings got manhandled. He got hit a few times with heavy shots, and they did not affect him. Klitschko had a small mouse below his left eye early, but it did not impact the bout.
Home Box Office has another fight for Klitschko under contract. Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury appear to be the next available dog meat opponents for Klitschko. It is also possible Klitschko could try Artur Szpilka or Vlacheslav Glaskov. Who knows? Wladimir has been in 22 world heavyweight title fights. No recent opponent has the power hitting ability or tenacity of a Rocky Marciano or Jack Dempsey to get inside and make a go of it.
