Iron Mike Tyson’s Ten Moments of Madness

Over the years, boxing fans have come to know, love and expect Iron Mike Tyson’s crazy zany moments. More a person of rage than a boxer of raw talent, schooled by the late legendary trainer Cus D’Amato, Iron Mike was real. But which were his unique moments of heavyweight madness and mayhem in the ring? Here are just a few, according to the great one himself.

Iron Mike Madness Moment Number One: The all-time favorite. In Mike Tyson versus Evander Holyfield II, referee Mills Lane disqualified Tyson for biting. Tyson bit off part of Holyfield’s right ear with 40 seconds left in round three, earning a two point deduction. When the action resumed, Tyson bit Holyfield’s left ear twice. When the round ended, Tyson was disqualified. After the bout, Tyson was fine three million dollars plus legal costs, had to serve community service. After a year and an appeal in court, Tyson’s boxing license was reinstated by a 4-1 vote of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Iron Mike Tyson Madness Moment Number Two: Iron Mike tattooed his face in early 2003, creating the logo synonymous with Iron Mike’s name and reputation today.

Iron Mike Madness Moment Number Three: All of the televised trash talk interviews Iron Mike gave with trash talk and curses, good publicity, and ridiculous clean fun.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Four: During the Tyson versus Lennox Lewis press conference, a brawl ensued, during which Tyson bit somebody’s leg.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Five: In his 2013 biography, Mike admitted he frequently used a ‘whizzer’, a fake prosthetic penis filled with urine, to pass drug tests as he could never go clean long enough as he was frequently coked up, high on marijuana, or drunk.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Five: Mike met with a witch doctor who performing voodoo, including dropping an egg and releasing a bird on the steps of the courthouse to free him from legal woes. Mike still went to jail in 1992 for six years, so the voodoo did not work. Mike had a sexual relationship with his female drug counselor while incarcerated.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Six: Tyson kicked Don King in the head in 2003 while riding in the Don King Rolls Royce with him in Florida in a tussle over money Tyson claimed he was owed. Tyson later sued dandy don for the millions he claimed he was robbed of by the promoter.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Six: Tyson admitted he frequently beat up fans who would not stop bothering him for autographs and photos when he was not ‘in the mood’.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Seven: Continued having sex with his actress wife Robin Givens during their divorce proceedings on a daily basis, except for the day Tyson caught his wife in bed with actor Brad Pitt.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Eight: Earned more than 65 million dollars in 2000, but was bankrupt by 2003 because he lost control over his money. Expenditures included a loss of 250 thousand dollars paid to a woman bit by one of his tigers.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Nine: Reached a Santa Claus Weight of over 379 pounds after retirement in 2005, enjoying a steady diet of ice cream, cookies and alcohol. Finally beat alcoholism in 2013.

Iron Mike Mad Moment Number Ten: Mike admitted he would have killed heavyweight Mitch Green in their Harlem street fight in 1988. The crowd of spectators saved Green from certain death after Tyson closed his left eye.
