Rafael Vazquez Wins Again at BB King, Awaits WBA Title Shot at Quigg

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent-Ringside

New York, NY (February 1st, 2015)– Rafael Vazquez of Brooklyn, New York, the World Boxing Association’s number six worldwide super bantamweight contender, scored an impressive fourth round stoppage at BB King Blues Club & Grill in the main of event of a DiBella Entertainment ten bout card sponsored by Everlast and Manfredi Auto Group on January 29, 2015. Opponent Joseph Rios was completely outclassed.

After giving away a feeling out first round, Vazquez, now 13-1, 11 knockouts, decked Rios twice in round two with left hooks while administering a brutal beating, moving Rios with every power head shot which landed. Rios, now 13-12-2, five knockouts, San Antonio, Texas, was courageous and game, taking a further beating in rounds three and four from Vazquez’ power accurate straight rights. Late in round four, Rios took a nine count on his knees from a jab-straight right combination, but beat the count and made it to his corner. Referee Benjy Esteves Jr. stopped the bout in the Rios corner between rounds, with the brave Rios having nothing further to prove.

DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing have gone through several contracts with Scott Quigg of Great Britain, with Quigg avoiding an actual fight with Vazquez each time. Promoter Lou DiBella stated after the bout he intends to build up Vazquez record (and confidence) with a few more tune up bouts before Vazquez receives a world title bout opportunity. Vazquez is a natural fighter, with power and heart. He started late, but he has ‘it’, and if anybody can bring a talented fighter into a world title bout, Lou DiBella can.

Result: Rafael Vazquez TKO 4 Joseph Rios, Super Bantamweights (3:00)

In the preliminary bout to the main event, featherweight contender Luis ‘KO King’ Rosa, 18-0, eight knockouts, New Haven, Connecticut, scored a second round stoppage over Noel Echevarria, now 11-5, six knockouts, Raleigh, North Carolina. Rosa hit Echevarria like a wild beast, knocking him from pillar to post in the first round, dropping him twice with a left hook followed by a flurry of power shots, then a right hook followed by a flurry of power shots, before referee Samuel Viruet stopped the bout at 2:36. Rosa could be a future world champion, and should climb the mountain to the top of the world ratings if promoter DiBella, who truly likes this fighter, continues to move him in the right direction, and Rosa can beat some serious rated fighters. Rosa, already a top 25 fighter in this reporter’s view has enough serious power to bury the featherweight division if they don’t avoid him.
