Golden Boy Settles with Schaefer and Al Haymon, Broner Disses Jay-Z, 50 Cent Disagrees

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (January 11th, 2015)– Golden Boy Promotions has surrendered its promotional rights to boxers who are signed with adviser Al Haymon. NBC has sold Haymon air time, and he plans to start his own boxing series on the NBC and NBC Sports Network later in 2015.

Former Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and Golden Boy have settled their lawsuits. The settlement prevents Schaefer from promoting boxing for others for a set period of time. Schaefer was the promotional heart of Golden Boy and made it what it is today, but apparently De La Hoya wanted to regain creative control. With Schaefer out of the picture, Haymon and company then jumped ship from Golden Boy, including Adrien Broner. The departure of Schaefer and Haymon has not only reduced Oscar De La Hoya’s combined promotional forces, it has depleted his boxing stable in the face of heavy competition.

Meanwhile, Broner rejected a $40 million offer to sign with Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports, calling Jay-Z’s offer disrespectful. After Broner’s statements went public, American Rapper 50 Cent, now also a boxing promoter, stated Broner should have taken the money.

The main thrust of the activity between promoters in boxing today is money. Goes the song ‘For The Money’ by the O’Jays, ‘Money Money Money’ seems to what is the force behind the mega publicity boxing has created recently. So much the better if boxing gets more positive publicity and fans.
