Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013

Adonis Stevenson (24-1, 20KOs) vs. Dmitry Sukhotsky (22-2, 16KOs)
Adonis Stevenson emerged as a potential superstar in 2013.  He went 4-0 with four knockouts and many boxing fans had him as the Fighter Of The Year.  His one punch destruction of Chad Dawson in June 2013 was a highlight reel knockout.  It made Stevenson the WBC and lineal champion at light heavyweight.  Sergey Kovalev also had a great year in 2013.  He also went 4-0 with four KOs and became the WBO Champion.  Stevenson and Kovalev appeared on the same card in Montreal on November 30th and a 2014 showdown seemed inevitable.  Fans were pumped up.  But Stevenson signed a deal with boxing power broker Al Haymon, jumping form HBO to Showtime and pretty much “Ducked” Kovalev.  Kovalev, on the other hand, sustained all of his momentum from last year and had a great 2014 with a victory over Bernard Hopkins to unify three of the four major belts.  Make no mistake about it, Stevenson has become one of the most denigrated fighters in the sport.  His unanimous decision win over tough contender Andrzej Fonfara last May was not that impressive.  At times during the fight, Stevenson looked shaky.  His opponent for this weekend, Dmitry Sukhotsky is a step down from Fonfara.  The Russian contender has a weak resume.  His two losses came against Juergen Braehmer and Cornelius White.  He has no big wins.  The fact of the matter is, even if Stevenson knocks out Sukhotsky in sensational fashion, he’ll get little in the way of credit form boxing fans, who still resent him for not fighting Kovalev this year.  Sukhotsky has some power.  He has the ability to hurt Stevenson and put the champion in a dangerous place.  Sukhotsky must rely on his guts and guile to win.  He has to be flawless.  Stevenson fights with good range and is very explosive.  Sukhotsky will need to maintain a tight, high guard in order to prevent Stevenson from catching him with a big bomb that could end the fight at any given moment.  Sure, Sukhotsky is a tough veteran with a ton of heart, but I will call this the Upset Of The Year in 2014 if Sukhotsky beats Stevenson.  Stevenson needs a statement that puts him back in the 175 pound argument.  Sukhotsky is made to order.  He is durable on the surface, but he is also a guy who falls miserably short when stepping up in class.  Before I get to my pick, let me just state for the record that if Kovalev fights Pascal and Stevenson doesn’t fight the winner, he will be forever known as a “Fraud” and nothing more than a “Paper Champion”.  My Pick: Stevenson wins by a 9th Round TKO.
Here are my other picks for some notable fights taking place this weekend: Andre Dirrell (23-1, 16KOs) over Derek Edwards (27-3-1, 14KOs) by an 8th Round TKO.  Artur Beterbiev (6-0, 6KOs) over Jeff Page Jr. (15-0, 10KOs) by a 9th Round TKO.  Jo Jo Dan (33-2, 18KOs) over Kevin Bizier (23-1, 16KOs) by Split Decision.  Jesus Cuellar (25-1, 19KOs) over Ruben Tamayo (25-4-4, 17KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Gary Russell Jr. (24-1, 14KOs) over Christopher Martin (28-4-3, 9KOs) by a 7th Round TKO.  Anthony Peterson (34-1, 22KOs) over Hector Velasquez (56-24-3, 38KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Julian Williams (17-0-1, 10 KOs) over Jamar Freeman (13-3, 6KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.
The Boxing Prophet’s Record (56-8)

RCM’s Boxing Record (53-12)
