Ernie Terrell, WBA World Heavyweight Champion Who Fought Ali, Dies at 75

Chicago, Il (December 20, 2014)– Ernie Terrell of Chicago, Illinois, who won the vacant World Boxing Association World Heavyweight title in March 1965 in Chicago with a 15 round decision over Eddie Machen, then defended it against George Chuvalo and Doug Jones before Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) decisioned him to win it over 15 rounds in February 1967, has died at the age of 75.
Terrell had a career record of 46 wins and nine losses between 1957 and 1973. His better wins included victories over Wayne Bethea, Cleveland Williams, Herb Siler, Zora Foley, Bob Foster, and Jose Luis Garcia.Terrell never got another world title shot after losing his WBA belt to Ali, losing a 12 round decision to Thad Spencer in a WBA elimination series eventually won by the late Jimmy Ellis, who also passed away in 2014.
