By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Omaha, Nebraska (September 28th, 2025)– Sometimes a victory parade does not end in victory. Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford received a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, September 27, 2025, as the celebrated center of attention in a victory parade in his honor for his win over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Ninety minutes after midnight, World Super Middleweight champion Terence ”Bud’ Crawford was handcuffed on his 38th birthday for reckless driving.
The Omaha Police Department released this official statement. “Shortly before 1:30 A.M. (on Sunday, September 28, 2025), officers working in the downtown area observed a vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol Avenue. A traffic stop was conducted at Cass Street. While speaking with the driver (Crawford), the officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.” Crawford was issued a citation for reckless driving.
At 1:30 A.M. on Sunday, September 28, 2025, 42-0 undisputed World Super Middleweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford on Omaha, Nebraska, was forced out of his car at police gunpoint by an Omaha police officer on video and then handcuffed. The incident, subsequently blown out of proportion on the internet due to a video of Bud getting busted, has led to an internal investigation by Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. The online video shows Crawford slowly unbuckling his seatbelt, opening his door and stepping out of the car, with the officer at his window holding a flashlight in one hand, and a police handgun pointed at Bud in the other.
The Omaha Police Department subsequently learned Crawford, as well as the other three occupants of his car, were all properly licensed to carry firearms. It was not revealed if officers at the scene found firearms in the possession of the other three occupants of Crawford’s car, which included a member of Crawford’s security team.
Omaha Mayor John Ewing also issued a statement, revealing he spoke to Crawford about the incident. “I learned Omaha police pulled over Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford on a traffic stop (in Omaha) downtown early this morning. After learning of this I spoke personally to Bud Crawford. I acknowledge the seriousness of what occurred, and how trust between law enforcement and our community is important, and shows the need to be continuously vigilant about building relationships. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer has pledged an internal investigation, which I support, and (we) want to be full and thorough. We will gather all the facts, and be transparent with the public about our findings. Understand that my heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day and evening celebrating our city’s world boxing champion. We held a great parade and great event at Heartland of America Park. The evening birthday party at Steelhouse, which I and members of my team attended, was a showing of (hometown) joy and pride. Omaha needs to remember this important day as a good one while we seek answers to how it ended. Meanwhile, we must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected in Omaha.”
