Showtime Shocker! Light Heavyweight Karpency Upsets Injured Dawson

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Southpaw light heavyweight Tommy Karpency is on fire. His sudden 10 round split decision upset win on Showtime at Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut this past weekend over an injured southpaw former WBC world champion Chad Dawson perhaps earned Karpency a world title shot at current WBC World Light Heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, presently ranked as the number one boxer in the world on BoxRec in the light heavyweight division, or maybe even Bernard Hopkins later this year.Presently, Hopkins is preparing for his title unification bout with Sergey Kovalev in Atlantic City next month.

Luck figured into Karpency’s victory. Dawson injured his left shoulder in the third and opted not to use his left hand for the remainder of the bout. Dawson tried to rely on his right jab and ability to slip punches. That approach was fine, until Dawson fouht a defensive tenth and final round and allowed Karpency to aggressively outwork him and take the round for the win. With his victory over Dawson, Karpency, 24-4 with 14 knockouts, Adah, Pennsylvania, was catapulted from second tier status into the world light heavyweight rankings.

Karpency has lost and won decisions with Pittsburgh trialhorse Rayco Saunders. Karpency lost to Andrzej Fonfara in a bid to win the vacant IBO World Light Heavyweight title in 2012. Fonfara went onto to fight Stevenson. Karpency also lost a bid to win the WBO World Light Heavyweight championship from Nathan Cleverly in Wales in 2012. In 2010, Karpency lost a bout to Karo Murat for the WBO Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight title. The combined records of Murat and Fonfara, at the time, was 44-0.

Karpency upset Dawson by landing power punches throughout the contest, and landing hard right hands which scored from the eighth round on. Karpencyclosed strongly to win the tenth and final round by attacking Dawson with aggression, which gave him the decision outright with the fight on the table and prevented a draw.

Result: Tommy Karpency Win Split Decision 10 Chad Dawson, Light Heavyweights
Referee: Steve Smoger
