King Kong Suspended! WBA Heavyweight Champ Luis Ortiz Anabolic Steroids Shocker
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (October 24th, 2014)– Interim World Boxing Association World Heavyweight champion Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz of Cuba has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for anabolic steroids after defeating Latif Kayode for the vacant interim WBA World Heavyweight title in Las Vegas on september 11, 2014, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
The postfight urine sample supplied by Ortiz voluntarily tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid substance nandralone. After a pending disciplinary hearing, Ortiz would lose most if not all of his 80 thousand dollar purse, and get suspended for one year. The bout which Ortiz had won by knockout would be changed to a No Contest.
Ortiz, 35, now 22-0 with 19 knockouts, a Cuban southpaw defector, might have forfeited his one chance at a world heavyweight title. Ortiz would next have faced WBA regular champion Ruslan Chagaev for a shot at WBA Heavyweight Super champion Dr. Wladimir Klitschko. Instead, Chagaev versus Klitschko seems the more likely possibility now. If Ortiz loses his Nevada disciplinary hearing, he has the right to appeal the outcome. Ortiz, who is promoted by Golden Boy, has filed for a continuance to have more time to prepare for his disciplinary hearing, which could delay the hearing date by several months.
