Here Comes GGG: Gennady Golovkin versus Rubio HBO Fight Card Preview

Carson, California (October 15th, 2014)–Gennady Golovkin versus Marco Antonio Rubio will be the main event at StubHub Center in Carson, California, on Saturday evening, October 18, 2014, of a seven bout fight card televised on HBO promoted by Promociones Del Pueblo, K2 Promotions and Top Rank. Golovkin, now 30-0, 27 knockouts, Kazakhstan, is favored to win by a unanimous 12 round decision over top contender Marco Antonio Rubio of Durango, Mexico, 59-6-1, 51 knockouts. If Rubio can cut off the ring and wage a technical war with Golovkin, the bout could be much closer. Rubio would have to withstand Golovkin’s power to drag the bout into the later rounds. Given Rubio’s technical skill and stamina, this is possible, but the odds of Rubio winning the majority of the early rounds are slim. Still, if Rubio could break Golovkin down and try for a later orund stoppage, the bout could prove to be very interesting. Rubio is the best and most game opponent Golovkin has faced yet. Golovkin’s WBA, IBO and interim WBC World Middleweight titles will be on the line.
In the co-main event, Filipino Nonito Donaire, 33-2, 21 knockouts, San Leandro, California, will defend his WBA Super World Featherweight title against WBA regular World Featherweight champion Nicholas Walters, 24-0, 20 knockouts, Montego Bay, Jamaica. Donaire is favored by late round TKO or 12 round majority decision, but Walters could score an upset. The victory will go to the fighter who executes the superior technical or power shot game plan. Both fighters have shown good knockout power in their careers.
In othe bouts, Dominican light heavyweight Edwin ‘La Bomba’ Rodriguez is favored over Azea Agustama of Haiti in a 10 rounder. Middleweight Marcos Reyes is favored over Abraham Han in a 10 rounder. Light welterweight Jaime Ocegueda is favored over Moris Rodriguez in a six rounder. Featherweight Walter Samoy is favored over Sergio Najera ina six rounder. In the opening bout, lightweight Ruslan Madley is favored over Joan Valenzuela in a four rounder.
