Riga, Latvia (July 27, 2014)– Roy Jones Jr. won a TKO victory over journeyman Courtney Fry from England. This was RJJ, Jr.’s fourth consecutive victory following three straight losses to competition that included current light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins. The fight was marginally exciting as both fighters used the first two rounds feeling each other out and sporadically engaging. The third round saw Jones take the initiative in bringing the fight to Fry, when Jones landed a couple of string left hooks to Fry’s head. Both fighters seemingly lacked the needed speed at the professional level to make for a competitive fight. In the fifth round, Fry started to engage, this allowed Roy Jones, Jr. to land several body shots and a left hook which knocked Fry down. Fry got up but was dazed and made it to the end of the round. The fight was ended while Fry was on the stool when he could no longer continue in between the fight and sixth rounds. Roy Jones improved to a record of 58-8 (41 KOs), while Fry drops to 18-6 (6 KOs)
The undercard was slated to have included future hall of famer James Toney on the undercard, though it seems to have not materialized. The undercard could allow for a rematch between the two fighters (Jones and Toney) almost exactly 20 years after they first fought (Nov 1994). This fight would draw the interest of the hardcore fan, but might put both fighters in significant danger due to declining skills. The license would most likely be given in a nation such as Latvia, where the standards to fight aren’t as high.
