Draka 15 – US Debut

Russian based Draka MMA Federation has partnered with Richmond’s Sweat Equity MMA Management to showcase a PRO / AM Mixed Martial Arts fight card with both unified, and Draka rules bouts.

Draka has been around since the early 1990’s and is no stranger to long time MMA enthusiasts. The sport and promotion has held fourteen events overseas, and looks forward to a successful debut in the United States. The main difference between Draka and unified rules is a 30 second time limit that starts once the fighters hit the canvas. If a finish is not achieved during this period, both fighters will be asked to stand and the action will resume. This makes for an action packed fight, and no chance for holding positions or stalling.

Pete Hatcher with Sweat Equity MMA Management commented on the difference, “I’ve been around MMA since the beginning and I’ll always love the traditional, unified MMA rules. But I think Draka offers something really spectacular for the casual fight fan. I’ve been to many events where the crowd starts getting anxious if the action stops or the ground game goes on too long. Some fans don’t understand or appreciate the grappling arts, so this will give them an exciting fight from bell to bell.”

The card will feature nearly fifteen matches between the unified and Draka, amateur and professional MMA bouts. Although the final matches and bout order have not been completed, Draka 15’s U.S. Debut is rumored to have several Virginia MMA fighters competing including: Joey Bayer and Caleb McAllister from Lynchburg, VA, Alan Stephenson from Louisa, VA, George Sheppard from Hampton Roads, VA and Steven Wampler of Richmond, VA.

“Central Virginia has been a growing hot-spot for professional MMA lately. We’ve been lucky to have six events over the last eighteen months with Pro MMA fighters on the card. Even better, three of those events were held in Richmond. I’m hoping this trend continues and with any luck, fans may be able to visit the coliseum three or four times a year” added Hatcher.

With the support of Virginia MMA advocates and the Richmond Coliseum, Draka 15’s U.S. Debut is expecting more than 2,500 MMA fans from across the Commonwealth. Long time Virginia MMA diehards will be treated to some of the area’s best talent, many of which will face Draka adversaries traveling in from Vladivostok. The evening will begin at 4:30pm with amateur MMA action, followed by the main event bell ringing at 6:30pm Saturday May 31st.

United Combat League debuts on GFL with “Torres VS Choate”, a stacked MMA card from the Hammond Civic Center in Hammond, Indiana on May 31. This event promises to be full speed from bell to bell as the fighters stepping into the cage will have extra incentive and motivation as their fight will now be broadcast worldwide on GFL.tv.

In the main event, former WEC Champion and UFC vet Miguel Torres (40-7) battles Wade Choate (11-14). Torres won his last fight via decision and is looking to recapture the magic of his fighting career where he was once considered the pound for pound king. Look for Torres to come out using a very technical striking game and use that to put Choate on the defensive. If the fight hits the mat, the crafty Torres will have an advantage as his grappling skills are some of the best in the world. Choate is a Midwestern vet who has proven himself to be a tough opponent on the regional circuit for years. This is his chance to turn heads across the country with a good showing against Torres. Choate has only gone to a decision twice in his 25 fight career so you can bet he will be looking to throw leather early and work for submissions if the fight hits the canvas. Don’t blink as both of these fighters have something to prove.

In other action, Ryan Hall (3-0) takes on Terry House, Jr. (6-8). Hall’s best weapons are his heavy hands as he has stopped 2 of his opponents via TKO. Hall also brings a very dangerous submission game into the cage. House fights with a high risk-high reward game and is always on the offensive. House will have a huge experience advantage going in to the cage and has fought some of the top prospects from the region. Look for these two to collide right from the onset of the fight.

Bellator vet Josh Shockley (11-2) and Ryan Bixler (18-20-1) mix it up in another highly touted fight. Shockley is riding a 2-fight win streak and is looking to win in impressive fashion against Bixler and proving that he belongs with the elite in the sport. Bixler is a grizzled vet from Iowa who has fought everyone in front of him and never turned down a fight. Bixler will be going into the fight looking to pull off an upset and he is highly capable of doing just that. Look for Bixler to let his hands go early and often and try and gain Shockley’s respect in the opening round.

United Combat League is sure to bring down the house once again as they have quickly grabbed a chokehold on Midwest MMA and this show will continue in that tradition. Order “Torres VS Choate” and watch live and anytime on video on demand only on GFL.tv.
