Clottey Wins

Joshua Clottey, Packing Venom, Knocks Down Mundine Five Times and Wins WBA International Light Middleweight Title in Australia

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

Watch out for Joshua Clottey, whose light middleweight punches pack a mean venom. WBA third ranked Anthony Mundine found out the hard way on his home turf at the Entertainment Centre in NewCastle, Australia, on April 9, 2014. Joshua Clotttey knocked down Mundine five times, twice in the sixth, twice in the eight, and again in the tenth round to clinch the victory. Mundine showed heart getting up, but Clottey dominated the bout.

Clottey, now 38-4, with 22 knockouts, Bronx New York by way of Accra, Ghana, maneuvered himself into position for a mega bout against Saul Alvarez, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara or Floyd Mayweather Jr. For the second consecutive bout, Clottey won every round on the scorecards, except one round on one card, and-with this victory-took Mundine’s World Boxing Association International Light Middleweight title in the process.

At age 36, Clottey’s 19 year professional boxing career promises at least one more world title bout. He was on the short end of the stick against Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito, and Miguel Cotto. Consistently Clottey has fought significantly the best in boxing during his career. For Mundine, 46-6, 27 knockouts, Sydney, Australia, at age 38, the road home has been a hard one. He beat an aging Sugar Shane Mosley, but despite his competitive spirit and fine record, a world title bout at 154 pounds now seems highly unlikely after this loss, and perhaps it will soon be time for Mundine to hang up his gloves with his head held high.

Clottey also proved it was not only possible, but very winnable for a Ghana fighter to go in Australia and et the decision. Azumah Nelson was one for two against Jeff Fenech in bouts in Australia. OsumanuAdama lost a 12 round decision to Daniel Geale for the world middleweight title. Scoring for Clottey versus Mundine, 117-108, 115-109, and 116-108 for Clottey appeared neutral and correct. In other places, Clottey versus Mundine would be the equivalent of a world title bout.
