Francois Botha To Face Danny Williams in Emirates Thursday Night Fights Main Event
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Once they were among the most feared heavyweights in the world. Danny Williams knocked out Iron Mike Tyson. Francois Botha, ‘The White Buffalo’, was outboxing Iron Mike Tyson in their bout until the point Tyson when stopped him.
On May 1, 2014, the past becomes the present in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Botha, now 45 years old, 48-11-3 with 29 knockouts, Newport Beach, California, will face Danny Williams, ‘The Brixton Bomber’, age 40, 45-21, 34 knockouts, London, United Kingdom.
Williams has won once one of his last 11 bouts. The bout he won in December 2013 was in the Emirates. Williams was stopped by Andrzej Wawrzyk in Poland in the first round last month. Botha has lost six in a row, and has won only one of his last nine bouts, a sixth round stoppage of Flo Simba is South Africa in June 2011. In Botha’s last bout this past month, Botha was stopped in the fifth round by Andrzej Wawrzyk in Poland in the fifth round. Somebody has to win. Who?
The odds favor Botha by experience. Williams did win last year, but his win was over an overinflated cruiserweight, Mazur Ali, who was never a heavyweight but was available in geographical vicinity (Egypt) at the time of the bout. Botha is lighter, and the blubbery Williams should get overworked and stopped any time after the seventh round. Overall, it is an interesting matchup between two fighters who hopefully will both call it a career after the show is over. Both fighters are eager for a payday-and at this point in their careers-have nothing to lose by fighting each other in a location which is somewhat new to boxing.
