Televisa Boxing Tragedy on Super Bowl Sunday: Featherweight Boxer Oscar Gonzalez Dies After Ten Round Kayo Loss To Jesus Galicia

Mexico City, Mexico (February 3, 2014)–Boxing’s first fatality of the year has occurred the day after Super Bowl Sunday. World ranked featherweight Oscar ‘Fantasma’ Gonzalez, 33, died on Monday February 3, 2014, at 1:50 P.M. CST after getting knocked out by 12-7 Jesus Galicia in the tenth round of their World Boxing Council Latino Featherweight Saturday evening main event title bout at Foro Polanco in Mexico City, Mexico, broadcast on the Spanish Televisa Network. Gonzalez’ final record was 23 wins, four defeats, with 14 knockouts. Southpaw Galicia rose to the number 15 worldwide BoxRec ranking position with the upset victory. Gonzalez went into a coma after the kayo, was declared brain dead at a Mexico City hospital, and died on two days later on Monday. Gonzalez was promoted by Erik Morales’ promotional outfit Box Latino.
