Golden Nugget Atlantic City Casino Hosts First Boxing Card Featuring Rossy-Dawejko
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
For the first time since Landry’s, an American privately owned, multi-brand dining, hospitality, entertainment and gaming corporation based in
Houston, Texas, purchased the Trump Marina Hotel and Casino from Trump Entertainment Resorts in February 2011 and gave birth to the Golden Nugget Atlantic City Hotel and Casino, a boxing card will be held at the Atlantic City Golden Nugget.
The original Golden Nugget existed 1980-1987 and was owned by Golden Nugget companies, Steve Wynn and Michael Milken, built on Boston Avenue on the site of the demolished Strand Motel. Wynn sold the original Golden Nugget to Bally Manufacturing in 1987. It later became the Atlantic City Hilton and ACH Casino Resort before it went bankrupt this month, and was reacquired by Caesars and Colony Capital, which sold the property nine years ago as part of their acquisition by Harrah’s Entertainment
A nine bout boxing card promoted by Sal Musumuci’s Final Forum ,put together by matchmaker Russell Peltz, features heavyweight veterans Derrick ‘The Shaolin Fist’ Rossy versus Joey ‘Polish Thunder’ Dawejko in the ten round main event. Dawejko, 8-3-2 with three knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a career Boxing 360 fighter, will be in the first bout scheduled beyond six rounds for the first time in his 15 bout professional career. For this reason, Rossy, 28-7, 14 knockouts, is favored to win. Rossy was originally scheduled to fight the main event at the ProPlex Brooklyn card which was snowed out last month in New York City. Rossy has been ten rounds or more seven times in his career, including going the ten round distance in his last bout against Fres Oquendo in June 2013 at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.
Since winning his first six pro bouts between 2009 and 2012, Dawejko turned hotel and cold for Boxing 360 President and CEO Dr. Mario Yagobi. Dawejko’s last seven bouts have had hot and cold results, a draw-won-lost-draw-lost-won-lost streak of inconsistency. Dawejko drew with Juan Carlos Robles, knocked out Edwin Ranquillo, lost a split decision to Dorsett Barnwell, drew with Jarrell Miller, lost a decision to Didier Spence in Montreal, decisioned Kevin Franklin, then got stopped by Charles Martin. Dawejko might go the distance, but it would be hard for the 23 year old Dawejko to win technically fought rounds against the more seasoned 33 year old Rossy.
On the undercard, heavyweights Jon Bolden and Natu Visinia will fight a six rounder, and heavyweights Ytalo Perea and David Williams will fight a four rounder. Also scheduled to appear: Middleweight Isiah Seldon; light middleweight Ishmael Garcia; super middleweight Gabriel Pham; cruiserweights Brian Donahue and Dave Valykeo in a four rounder; light welterweights Brian Brito and Korey Sloane in a four rounder; and debuting super bantamweights Anthony Caramanno and Michael Varela in a four rounder.
Billed as ‘Fight Night’, special guest Rosie from the television show Real Housewives of New Jersey is scheduled to appear. Doors open 6:30 P.M., first bout 7:30 P.M. Tickets can be obtained via the Golden Nugget Box Office on a ticket available basis.
