Zoltan Petranyi, Europe’s Oldest Heavyweight Champion at 47
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
At age 47, Hungarian and UBO European Heavyweight champion Zoltan Petranyi is unlikely to get a world title shot at Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko as his career winds down.
A winner of fourteen straight bouts, Petranyi had a rough start. He won his first two professional bouts, then won only five of 16 bouts between 1996 and 2002 early in his career. Petranyi scored a third round knockout over 12-1-2 Tibor Balogh to retain his Hungarian and UBO titles on December 29, 2013, in Budapest, Hungary. While not an ‘A’ level fighter, in the least, Petranyi deserves an ‘A’ for effort for achievement in the ring in the twilight of his career, as it winds down.
Petranyi’s career record stands at 50 wins and 20 losses, with 15 knockouts, a Rocky Balboa like who’s who of heavyweights in the past 17 years, including such names as Denis Boytsov, First Arslan, Steve Herelius, Dieter Roth, Johann Duhaupas, Oliver Rubin, Vincenzo Rossitto, Dirk Wallyn (twice), Richel Hersisia, Joseph Chingangu, Danny Williams, Aldo Colliander and Leif Larsen. Petranyi was unable to beat any of them.
