Cotto – Rodriguez Round by Round Recap

By: Lita B. Kaufman – RCM Ringside Reporter

Undercard

ORLANDO, Fla. (October 6th, 2013)— It was a pretty uneventful night in boxing here at The Amway Center. The most exciting bout was Dat Nguyen vs. Jayson Velez. Velez came up from behind in the later rounds of the fight but not enough credit or points was given to Nguyen who lost to Velez by unanimous decision. It was another episode of poor scoring.

Here is how the night played out:

Bout 1: 4 Rounds – Featherweight – LAMAR CHARLTON – (1-4-1, 1 KOs) 124.8lbs. out of Ocala, FL. Age 35, 5’4″, 68″ vs. RICKY TOMLINSON – (1-0, 1 KOs)- 124.8 out of Thonotasassa, FL. Age 29, 5’8”, 69” which ends in a Split Draw – The audience as well as myself believe that Charlton clearly should won unanimously.

Round 1 – First bell rang shortly after 7 pm. Lamar Charlton’s form was better than his opponent and he landed more body shots. The crowd screamed boring, boring throughout the match however it was nowhere near as boring and less stimulating as the Klimov vs. Crawford bout. Middle of the 1st Tomlinson starts to fight back against Charlton and the round ends with excitement.

Round 2 – Charlton landed a great shot in early in the 2nd but he and Tomlinson were feeling each other out and measuring each other most of the rest of the round.  Again, an unimpressive round.

Round 3 – Punches are traded and at 1:52 there was an exchange of fists. Tomlinson gets in some shots but Charlton is clearly the more skilled fighter.

Round 4 – Pretty much a mirror of round 3 except for a flurry of punches with the fight ending in a slugfest.

Bout 2: 4 Rounds – Middleweight – STEVEN CHADWICK – (2-4, 1 KOs) 160.4lbs. out of Jacksonville, FL. Age 35, 6’1″, 76″ vs. MOISES CARRASQUILLO – (3-0, 3 KOs) 161.4lbs. out of Orlando, FL. Age 22, 6’0″, 74.5″.

Chadwick is obviously not a crowd favorite as Carrasquillo hails from Orlando…

Round 1 – Nothing much to report in this round except that Carrasquillo landed 3 solid shots towards the last 30 seconds and had nicer trunks.

Round 2 – Mostly uneventful until the end of the round however, Carrasquillo was clearly the superior in style and technique. Chadwick countered with a few head shots before the end of round 2.

Round 3 – Chadwick was on the defensive for the majority of the round while being pummeled by Carrasquillo…

Round 4 – Virtually no action but Carrasquillo wins by unanimous decision.

Bout 3 – 6 Rounds – Lightweight GARY EYER – (11-3-1, 7 KOs) 132.6lbs. out of Duluth, MN. Age 27, 5’8″, 70′.5″. vs. FELIX VERDEJO – (7-0, 5 KO) 133.4lbs. out of San Juan, P.R. Age 20, 5’9″, 71.5″.

Gary Eyer vs. Felix Verdejo went on at 8:20 pm due to timing. This fight came on as the 3rd fight. Verdejo is the undefeated champion and clearly was the crowd favorite…

Round 1 – Verdejo has style and technique. He tends to move in and out quite swiftly. He is the more aggressive, offensive fighter in this round.

Round 2 – The ref stops the fight temporarily after Eyer is barraged with facial shots so that a Doctor can have a look at Eyer. The fight goes on however the ref ends the fight as Eyer got mauled repeatedly. At just near 10 seconds in the 2nd round and again at 2:53. Round 2 TKO by Felix Verdejo who remains undefeated….

Bout 4 – 8 Rounds – Super Welterweight JAMAAL DAVIS – (14-10-1, 6 KOs) 153.8lbs. out of    Philadelphia, PA. Age 32, 5’10”, 71”. vs.  JORGE MELENDEZ – (26-3-1, 25 KOs) 153.8lbs. out of Manati, PR. Age 24, 6’0″, 73”. 15 seconds into Round 1 Davis goes down. Under 1 minute to go he goes down gain. He is disoriented but the fight continues…to no avail.

Round 2 – Davis appears to come back strong in the 2nd round but fatigues quickly. 2 minutes later Davis is done and Melendez wins by TKO…

Bout 5 – 10 Rounds – Featherweight – DAT NGUYEN – (17-2, 6 KOs) 125.6lbs. out of Vero Beach, FL. Age 30, 5’6″, 67″. vs. JAYSON VELEZ – (20-0, 15 KOs) 126.4lbs. out of Juncos, P.R. Age 25, 5’8″, 70″.

Round 1 – Cocky and confident Dat Nguyen takes the lead by pummeling the favorite Jayson Velez in the middle of round 1.

Round 2 – Jayson comes out strong but Dat counters every parlay. This is by far the most exciting round of the night. Dat can take all Jayson has to give but the ref stops it to give Jayson a standing 8 count. They came out to the center and spent the rest of the round counter attacking each other.

Round 3 – Jayson is leery of the beating he is taking and tries to hang back. Dat is on the offensive in this round and keeps coming to Jayson who keeps backing away from the barrage of fists.

Round 5 – Dat is staring Jayson down like a brawler and the punches he receives seem to have no effect on him. Jayson looks disoriented for most of the 5th round.

Round 6 – Bobbing and weaving through this round, Jayson can’t even hit anymore. The only thing saving him is his reach. Not much action this round.

Round 7 – Dat appeared to come out of the corner as fresh as in round 1 but clearly deteriorates. Jayson is tired and ineffective as well but at 2:30 into the round there was toe to toe action and Dat ends it with many body shots.

Round 8 – Jayson comes out strong but Dat counters each punch. Jayson comes back strong and now it is Dat’s turn to take a beating. Both are getting weary. More toe to toe action.

Round 9 – Not much action in the round until 2:15 at which time it was still a pretty even match. As the round ended it appeared that Dat went down but was saved by the bell.

Round 10 – Both warriors are exhausted but hanging on trading shots. This brutal exchange continued until the closing bell.

The judges did not score properly here either and awarded Jayson a unanimous win.

Bout 6 – 10 Rounds – NABO Lightweight Title – ANDREY KLIMOV – (16-0, 8 KOs) 134.6lbs. out of Klimovsk, RUS. Age 31, 5’9”, 71.5”. vs. TERENCE CRAWFORD – (21-0, 16 KOs) 134.6lbs. out of Omaha, NE. Age 26, 5’8″, 74″

This proved to be one of the most boring and uneventful fights that I have seen to date. The crows literally booed the entire 10 rounds.

Round 1 – Zero action.

Round 2 – Zero action.

Round 3 – In the middle of the 3rd Crawford lands a few blows and seems to have knocked the Russian out after the bell. Saved by the bell again.

Round 4 – Zero action.

Round 5 – Nothing.

Round 6 – The pace picked up a little bit with Klimov hitting the canvas but then the round ended. Another possible saved by the bell scenario.

Round 7 – Little action.

Round 8 – Crawford connected with a few blows but nothing spectacular…

Round 9 – Crawford landed blows again with no excitement or affect.

Round 10 – Crawford wins by unanimous decision – Snorefest!!!

The Main Event – Cotto v Rodriguez – 12 Rounds – Super Welterweight

The crowd goes wild waking up from the previous bout and Cotto looks like he is back to his old self. He whooped Rodriguez swiftly with vigor and brutality and ended the fight in the 3rd round.

Round -1 – Cotto comes out on the offensive and appears to be hurting Rodriguez early on. He is working Rodriguez’s body with fervor.

Round 2 – Cotto aggressively attacks Rodriguez early in round 2. Rodriguez tries to come back however; Cotto continues to work the body as the opponents go toe to toe. Towards the end of the round the pummeling continues and the last punch leaves Rodriguez bewildered.

Round 3 – Lights out at 2:42 for Rodriguez as Cotto wins with a destroying TKO.

Cotto appears to be back in form with the help of Freddie Roach and is well prepared for his next bout against a top level contender.
